Interesting point, however you have to understand the Palestinian people have been suffering from Israeli oppression for decades and its of no surprise to me that they voted in Hamas. We had a couple of Palestinian students visit my uni a couple of weeks ago. Some of stories they had were awful. The IDF well and truly treats them as third class citizens.

Because its Israel. Something in me tells me that had Hamas carried out a similar atrocity, it would have been pasted on every news paper across the globe, and even now it would still be front page news. Israel can break every law, UN resolution, and Geneva convention and neither the US or the UK will do anything about it.

Yep, I remember hearing about the other small, middle eastern country who had illegal WMDs and commit atrocities against other ethnic groups

Has anyone seen those photos/footages of children shot directly in the head and chest? Right in the center. These were no accidents. Also, the Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert claimed thier were infants with crushed skulls with "brain matter" leaking from thier heads, indicating their heads had been stamped on! It is not difficult to see who are the resistance fighters, and who are the "terrorists"!

    Re: Sympathy for Israel

Well, the good news is that the Feeeman debacle in the USA may have contributed to a weaken ing of the American Jewish lobby's position. Tomdispatch Blog.

Obama needs some balls to stand up to Israel, but he may just be in a position to do it. Of course, now that Netanyahu and Leiberman will be deciding policy it will be a toss up between more like Gaza or something really awful.

I am willing to bet that on this date next year at least 5,000 more Palestinian civilians have been murdered. Israel normally only murders around 800 civilians per year, but Netanyahu has a lot of catching up to do and Leiberman actually stood on a platform of genocide.

So all of you waving a flag for Israel, you have a happy time coming. No need to wait for another Jade Goody to die in front of you. There will be blood nightly on the BBC, until it becomes boring.

Is that not the problem of all racially, religiously, ethnically (delete as appropriate) charged wars? The two respective sides cease to see the people and are motivated merely by a cumulative hatred and radicalisation, and lose the acceptance of their shared, if distinct, history.

The other thing is it has long ceased to be a professional war - i.e. fought by soldiers, on a battlefield. When what is at stake is your house, your home, your family, you will fight to levels that you previously would never have considered possible. Right or wrong, both sides have contributed to the escalation of the conflict, and neither seems particularly willing to be the first to lay down arms. I personally lack the level of understanding of the causes of the crisis to make any definitive points about how a solution can be engineered, but needless to say it would require sacrifices from both sides, something neither side seems ready to accept.

The other aspect to the emotionally charged conflict is a perceived need to prove who is right - on top of the need to settle territorial disputes. This is where the majority of the social motivation must come from, to give the drive and social acceptance required to continue a war that impacts on all segments of society - by its very definition, a total war.

I fear that like Northern Ireland, it is a subject that will continue to flare up and then calm down again, and is something that will take a long time to negotiate a settlement. This doesn't stop me from hoping for an improvement of relations in the short term, as both peoples are suffering, just some more than others.

Actually this in an interesting point, i'd disagree.

Obama has done more to piss off the zionist parties than recent president. He has tried to extend the olive branch to Iran, with many of his comments bound to anger Israel, he does them anyway.

One of the things many commentators have noted is that Israel won't have been taking this without doing anything, its been suggested that they will have been threatening to withhold information. Ex Mossad cheifs have gone on the record saying Obama policy will give Iran nukes.

I saw. I also read the Guardian's report and the UN report (all difficult as Israel is still preventing access to Gaza until the cleanup is over).
I particularly disliked the articles about the IDF troops targetting medics trying to help the wounded, that hospitals and clinics were targetted specifically, schools destroyed in passing, etc. but they are all standard tactics for Israel.

What got me this time was the official approval of murder of civilians. There are countless stories emerging of soldiers killing entire families in their houses, little old ladies carrying the shopping home, and little kids playing. One report in the Chinese Press had a photo of a dead kid of four or five with a bullet through his head and another through the head of his teddy. You can't be too careful with those teddies.

Still, the official Israeli line is that "Palestinians lie", and "Lot's of accidents happen in the fog of war".

I wonder if those who 'Can see Israel's point of view" would feel the same if the UK had been invaded by the Nazis after we declared war on them in 1939, and they had decided to resist as they were exterminated and dispossessed. Or would they just say, "Well, you shouldn't attack the occupying army"?

He did do a lot of Israeli ass kissing during his presidential campaign visit at AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs). But can you blame him? Its a generally a standard thing to do if you want to run for president, I'm not sure you can if you dont

Very true. A president can also try and go against them, but the outcome is not usually good....

Longshanks - depends on how you view history - whether you merely connect the dots between conflicts or whether you see stability temporarily interrupted by fighting. Glass half full vs half empty sort of situation.

The same can be said of Europe, or the Americas, etc...
