If the child says no, and they force the child to have a piercing, isn't that already a form of assault under UK law.
I think the age should be a lot higher than 10!! 16 minimum.
I'm sure we could find something more important to put our energies into rather than this?
I think it is important as some parents obvioulsy don't care about thier kids. Putting them through something that they have no control over and which causes them pain etc.
Reading the threads on Hexus i think you will agree that this thread is more important than some of the others!
well that's exactly the way I got me first tattoo when I was 16. Maybe just a case of the tattooist covering his ass there. I regret the design I chose but not getting it done. It reminds me of what I was like at that age and brings back memories.
But there lies my point - I really wanted to have it done. And, as with ear piearcing, I think that if the child wants it done, then so be it.
I remember when I was at infant school young girls wanting it done. I say leave it to free will where possible instead of dictating to people right and wrong based on your own beliefs. Ruin's it for everyone else.
You complain that the child has no choice - no voice in it. So I'll have my voice even if I do not agree.
You must be a real git to force your child though. Same for the piercer that does it.![]()
Whilst yes, it certainly should be banned for babies/toddlers (unless it's for - and i think this is very dubious and wrong - religious reasons), i have yet to meet many girls who are under 12 who don't want to get their ears pierced. That doesn't mean that the age limit should be lowered, i'm all for it being raised to 16 (i think 18 is being a little ridiculous for getting your ear's pierced..). However, i think it should be a minimum age of 16 by yourself, and over 12 with parental consent (note, consent not forcing).
However, i think the "trauma" of getting a baby's ears pierced is MINIMAL compared to the mandatory circumcision that various Religions and a lot of American males go through. Part of my family is Jewish (i'm not) and i've been to a Bris and it's not nice - it's done without anaesthetic as a rite of passage and i quote one of my more distant relatives "oh, it's fine, the baby can't feel anything in the foreskin anyway". Any uncircumcised guy and anyone who has been to one of these ceremonies (be it Jewish, Muslim, Christian) knows damn well that the baby can feel what's going on. Circumcision, without medial necessity is much more of a mutilation than an ear piercing.
Ear piercings? Walk in the park..

I say, they can choose when they are 16. No younger.
well it's thousands of nerve endings in a 1/2" square areas as a baby apparently
Watched a show on it a while ago, they were saying although the baby looks like its sleeping its actually going into shock BEFORE it happens.
Even worse that you dont have 10% discount to be jewish......
Barbarians come to mind.
I'm sure it does make you feel ill and I'm not saying it is right. What I am saying is that there are more serious issues that need to be addressed before we all go off on one over this.
You'll prob say "like what" so as an example what about pensioners that cannot afford to heat their houses?
