Which halfwit throught laptops with numberpads was a good idea

and when did ALL the bloody manufacturers decide to incorporate numberpads? This really winds me up. GRRRRRRRRRR. What's the point? Makes the whole thing unwieldly, too large, it's utter pointless unless you're an accountant, and probably even then.

And they've all adopted it!!! What's the rationale there?

"Quick, people want huge laptops with unnecessary buttons!"
"Quick, it's a recession, roll out the "more buttons for your buck" design!"
"Quick, left handed gamers might want to navigate their FPS games with a number pad!"

Re: Which halfwit throught laptops with numberpads was a good idea

Sounds like a lefty rant disguised as a tech rant to me....

I like having a number pad on my laptop, but then I cart around a 17" screen on mine, so the base has room to spare, and unless the manufacturers are putting a huge bevel around the screen to accomodate an extra large keyboard, I don't see the harm.

    Got any examples?

yeah - they design the laptop around the keyboard, not around the screen and hardware specs

Not that it really affects me, being one of those crazy desktop owning types but I find having a numeric keypad very useful, I can type numbers in far faster with it than with the top row keys.

I've always wondered how much space a touch pad is and whether a diddy mouse that is retractable is a better solution - I hate those touch pads.

Re: Which halfwit throught laptops with numberpads was a good idea

    My laptop has numerical buttons.

I use them much more as home, end, pg up and pg dn, because it's a PITA Num (un)locking all the time.

I do use it as a number pad when I'm typing in lots of numbers, it's far easier. I quite like it how it is.

Oh, by "lefty", I thought you meant hand wringing hippie.

Nope, not a south paw either.

Am happy to have touched upon an area that people feel strongly about though

Re: Which halfwit throught laptops with numberpads was a good idea

I tend the find the problem is that most laptops DON'T have a numeric keypad..the majority that I see have that absolutely useless FN version..which means your stuck with the "standard" numeric keys on the top row..which is just slow to use, especially if you are typing lots of numbers.

More laptops with numeric keypads please!

I miss a numpad on my laptop, so much easier to type IP Addresses with one!

I've become very quick at typing the Class C Private IP range on the numpad, it's the one I use most, very quick at it!

So, I think having 'em on Laptops is a good idea!
