It's not about taxation in the slightest. The electricity companies can still make just as much money (if not more - investing in the future i.e paying for new generation equipment) from the sale of their electricy generated from other more environmentally friendly sources.

Taxation only comes into domestic petrol/diesel issues, and that's a whole other story.

Because in a major city like New York, a *lot* of people rely on public transport. The trains, trams etc run off electricity, if you look at the photos you can clearly see big traffic queues of people in cars, *and* all those people walking are the ones that didn't drive. Simple really.

Electricity is sold abroad because power cables cross the channel and connect into the foreign grids.
