This film is being done by the same people behind Star Wreck!
If you have not seen Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning it is worth checking it out. It is a Finnish fan film parodying both Star Trek and Babylon 5:

For a fan film release a few years ago the Special Effects are truly amazing!! The best version is the first version of the film. The second version of the film had to change the model for the Babylon 5 and Star Trek ships due to legal issues.

Basically almost everyone in the Star Wreck universe is an idiot!!
The second version has better effects but the ship models are not the same as the Star Trek and Babylon 5 ones.
Iron Sky looks to be a comedy too especially when you see the end of the trailer.

cat, i know there is a lot of star trek fan fic going on, and i guess the same for babylon 5.. but nazis, and the moon?

Star Wreck is one of the most watched sci-fi internet fan films in history with a few million downloads. It is also feature length too(over 100 minutes).
These guys took 7 years to make it the last film and it even impressed HP enough for them to provide equipment for Iron Sky.
Universal were involved in distributing the DVD so this is the reason a second version of the last film with different ship models had to be made.
Its a comedy(with Finnish humour). Watch Star Wreck and Iron Sky does not seem something out of the ordinary TBH. It is meant to be daft just like the whole Star Wreck universe was daft!
This is some blurb about the background to the film from Wikipedia:
"As a dark science fiction comedy that plays with Finland's history of being oppressed by Sweden, Russia and the Nazis, Iron Sky is a deliberate thematic throwback, a modern implementation of once-popular science fiction tropes that have fallen into disuse, such as Nazis in space"
It seems that Robert A. Heinlein wrote a book about having Nazis in space called Rocket Ship Galileo during World War 2.
Even Star Trek had Nazis and Aliens together in Enterprise!
