    Re: Computer related phone scam?

A relative of mine got a phone call two weeks after taking delivery of their laptop from dell saying that they would 'fix' their PC, and basically used remote assistance to come in and act like they were doing something, for free.

They then offered 2 years' cover for a certain fee, which my relative felt obliged to pay seeing as they done all of this work for free, but he couldn't pay them, not having a credit card, and it all fell through.

Probably not exactly the same as this, but it's virtually always a scam of some type :/

I think it's quite funny that googling "providings" yields those results .

Eek! I should probably warn the more naive computer users I know about this.

Feel sorry for LogMeIn though, this could seriously affect their reputation (who here reckons it was all set up by GoToMyPC? )

    Re: Computer related phone scam?

    *threadbump*

Oh God, I've been waiting for this so much. Just got a call from these people (or someone like them).

Thankfully, feeling in a playful mood, and having my wits about me, I had some fun. I promise - this conversation was totally genuine and adlibbed

    *phone rings*
    Me: Hello?
Woman with an Indian accent: Hello, I'm calling from (something) computer company, and we've had reports that your computer is running slowly.
Me: (thinks for a couple of seconds) What? Hello?
Woman: Hello sir, have you noticed your computer is being slow recently?
Me: Well, it doesn't have any wheels. It doesn't have any wheels so if I try to push it down a hill, it sort of slides down quite slowly.
Woman: Are you on your computer now?
Me: Yes. Yes I am. It's wobbling a bit, but it appears to be supporting my weight.
    Woman: Pardon?
Me: I'm on my computer. I'm stood on it right now.
Woman: OK... can you go to the address bar at the top of your screen?
Me: My screen is on it's side and I can't work out how to turn it round. HA HA HA!
    Woman: I'm sorry?
Me: My screen is on it's side.
Woman: Can you go to google?
Me: I've got a copy of Google printed out. Is that what you want?
Woman: The google website? Google UK?
Me: Is google the one with the cats on it? I've got that one on my screen. It's got something about a cheeseburger on it?
Woman: Can you go to the google website? Type www.google.co.uk in to internet explorer?
Me: I don't have a G key on my keyboard.
    Woman: Pardon sir?
Me: I don't have a G key on my keyboard. It came off when my dog pulled my keyboard off it's shelf. I can't type the letter G. All the other letters are there though! Ha ha!
Woman: OK, if you can go to your address bar and...
    Me: OUCH!
    Woman: Hello?
Me: Sorry, I just got an electric shock from my mouse. Can you fix it?
Woman: You got an electric shock?
Me: I got an electric shock! Did... did.. you didn't send it did you?
Woman: Just let me pass you on to my supervisor.
    Me: (stifled giggles)
    Man: Hello sir?
Me: HELLO! How are you this fine day, sir?
Man: OK, if you can go to the address bar please
Me: My screen is on it's side!
Man: Can you type www.google.co.uk in the address bar?
Me: I don't have a G key no my keyboard.
    Man: Pardon?
Me: I don't have a G key. My dog got all excited, pulled the keyboard off it's shelf and swallowed the G key.
    Man: *sigh*
    *click*

    RESULT!

Obviously my PCs are all working at the top of their performance, seeing as these companies haven't rung me. Phew!

That would be great actually. Run through all of it for half an hour or so, and then say "Hmm. Does your .exe file work on Gentoo?"

    Re: Computer related phone scam?

I had one of these the other day, here is how it went :

Man "Hello sir, we have information stating that your PC has a Virus"
Me "Has it? It's not connected to the internet"
Man "Do you have access to the Internet"
    Me "Yes, Dial up"

I was trying hard not to laugh at this point

Man "Do you have another number I can call you back on"
Me "Yes, you can call my mobile number"
Man "Can I have that please"
Me "Oh wait a minute, I don't know what it is"
Man "I must be able to fix your PC by you having an active internet connection"
Me "My PC is very old, I don't use it much"

He starts to get agitated at this point, I'm thinking I can get a bit more mileage out of it.

Man "I see, what version of Windows do you use?"
Me "I don't run Windows, I run Norton Commander"
    Man "Whats 'Norton Commander'?"

The puzzled tone in his voice at this point is fantastic, he sounds so confused now and he's starting to get quite angry.

Me "It's an easier way of navigating around your hard drive"
Man "Is it a windows application?"
Me "Windows ? Whats windows ?"
Man "When you turn on your PC, what does it say, it should say Windows XP or starting Windows"
Me "Oh, it says starting MS-Dos, I think it's version 5"
Man "Oh I see, how much ram does your PC have ?"
    Me "640"
    Man "640 megabytes ?"
    Me "640 kilobytes"

At this point he hangs up, best laugh I've had, thats three calls like this I've had now in the last few months. The last one was a few weeks ago when I told them I had a mac and they hung up pretty quick and the time before that I got rather rude with a few choice words told the chap go fourth and multiply sideways and to go and get a proper honest job.
