    any UK Bird spotters

    Hi folks,

I was out and about enjoying the sunshine yesterday in the Malvern Hills, while I was there I saw a small reddy/brown bird of prey hovering, and obviously with it's eye on something. I tried to get a picture, but it was too small and too fast to capture an image (with my crappy old camera)

Just wondered if anyone might know what sort of bird it was?

I've done a bit of googling and not had any luck

    Thanks in advance

Could've been a Red Kite, they would be resident in the Malverns this time of year.

Paulm - It's a lovely place to visit, there were lots of contented looking doggies about yesterday.

roorooroo- that certainly looks like it, quite small and it was using the thermals from the hillside edges.

OiD - Ooh thanks for that too, I'll go do some more informed googling now I have some types to go on.

    Thanks folks

You're welcome, probably a Kestrel as they're quite a small bird of prey. Hope you find out what it was anyway

    Re: any UK Bird spotters

roorooroo's almost certainly bang on the nail there - Kestrel (or Windhover to give it its colloquial, countryside name.)

There are a pair who nest locally to me and I often see them hovering over the garden or the neighbouring fields. Buzzards (much bigger but also brown birds) can do something similar but will usually just circle high-up.

I know the Malverns very well, I used to run up there when I was a lot younger and fitter.
