    Apartment Advice

For my final year at University, myself and a mate are looking at renting out a 2 bed apartment for the duration of the year. Having never lived in an apartment (aside from cheap student digs, where the walls were made of swiss cheese) I don't know what to expect, what possible problems could come up and general points to be careful of.

My main concern is with noise insulation, i will be having my gf & our daughter down every other week/weekend and as she will be only a few months old she will cry. a lot. Are these sorts of things frowned on within apartment communities? I know it might sound a bit daft but i want to be sure.

How good is the noise insulation within modern apartments? The ones we are looking at are about 18 months old so im guessing they are up to date with all the latest rules & regs, but how good are they? I have a fairly powerfull hi-fi, so im curious as to how much bass etc can travel through apartments. Obviously if i turn it up excessively loud it will be heard but how easily does sound travel through them?

Has anybody ever had experiences with either of the above?

    thanks guys

As for noise, yes, as a rule of thumb they won't be that well insulated and your neighbours may well complain if the noise is excessive. I guess on the whole a baby is just one of those things people will put up with, though you won't make many friends. Noise from a stereo, even at low volumes and particularly if it's got a powerful bass speaker is far less well tolerated.

Best thing to do is ask the other tenants/see if you can try it out first.

    Re: Apartment Advice

Fair point, they're advertised as apartments so figured id stick with it! Flats are easier 2 type so no complaints from me!

I made friends with the neighbours of the house we're currently in and gave them my number & let them know in advance about parties etc, so ill be doing the same here. Is it the people next door, or people above/below that will be most likely to hear said noises.

    thanks

Below would be the worst but so long as it's only occasionally rather than every day and so long as it doesn't go on all night most people will put up with a bit of noise now and again.

    Indeed.

All the new 'flats/apartments' that are being thrown up across the country look nice but the walls are like tracing paper. I've seen thicker izal toliet roll than some of the walls in flats I've looked at.

I'm lucky atm as the flat I'm in is above a shop so when it closes at 9 there's no people around to complain about noise levels and thats when the sub on my PC get's cranked to 11.

If you have a garden to faciliatate it, maybe it would be a good idea to have some sort of a barbeque. If not maybe a housewarming party, get to know a few neighbours explain your situation etc.
