Traffic Cops aren't all that bad.

A couple of months ago (must have been end of March) i was slightly late for work so i decided to make use of my cars power and try and makee up the time. Espically as it was 3 in the morning and i thought if anyones coming the otherway i'll see the lights so i can slow down and i'd like to class myself as a safishdriver (still hadn't had a speeding ticket which i thought was good most blokes get one).
So i must have been going about 50 in a 30 zone ( i know its bad but it was one of those moments. Right car, on the right time and i needed to get somewhere fast ) and i went past a junction where a Volvo was waiting.
As it pulled out i noticed it caught up with me fairly fast and seemed to be sticking with me which i thought was odd. It was just then as i thought perhaps it an unmarked police car it's light came on and low and behold!

So i pulled over and waited for the worse. I said i was late for work even though i knew it wouldn't do any good and admitted to breaking the limit. He then took my details down and gave me a talk about what could happen with me going to fast which i actually took to heart.

I then waited over the coming days for the letter to come throught the post but it never came. I can only assume that the officer decided i learnt my lesson which i have to say i actually have. I'm now much less eager to go for the overtake and take risks as i've decided it's just not worth it. It puts my life and others at risk.

Bu this now sets me thinking how i reckon i've learnt more this way than getting caught by a speed camera. If that had come through i would have been annoyed but would still have carried on driving a fast at times (not all the time mind. Just on those moments). But becuasce he talked i actually learnt more and i'm 100% safer now.

When i know that some people won't learn like i did but perhaps the police should do this sort of thing more. i know it worked for me

if you dont get a ticket at the roadside then they wont follow it up. they record your details and file them. class it as your chance and slow down for volvo's in the future

Re: Traffic Cops aren't all that bad.

So you learn from him not giving you a ticket, but, despite admitting you were driving around 60% over the limit, you wouldn't have learned as much from getting a ticket and would still would have been annoyed? Without knowing the area, it's a 30 zone, so even ignoring other motorists, what about any pedestrians?

    Not much logic there.

I don't want to claim I'm a perfectly clean rider (I'm not - I've hit 90 before even realising), but I just don't intentionally speed. It just isn't worth the time you save. If you speed through 30 zones you deserve any penalty you get.

    Lucky. Very lucky.

I the talk that he gave me that made me learn. Eg pedestrians. If i'd just got a ticket through the post i'd wouldn't have really learnt anything new. It was him talking to me that did that.

Probably 30 on a dual carriageway where pedestrians arnt allowed anyway, the speed limits in this country are a joke, its a wonder anyone respects them they have been picking and picking them lower for years...

Re: Traffic Cops aren't all that bad.

I got caught red handed racing in an industrial estate 6 months after id passed my test. Wont tell you how fast we were going as the chances are you wouldn't believe me. Long story short I spent the _worst_ 45mins of my life with an officer (other officer was with my mate) being verbally destroyed and being told in detail what we were being taken away for (a riot van turned up half way through this). Car was checked, i was checked and when he was satisfied that id learnt my lesson he gave me a brutal warning before letting me go with just a producer. You might think the fact i was let off is just me exaggerating but I can only assure you not.

I only wish i could meet the officer and thank him for what he did for me, that slap back down is one of the best things thats happened to me.

edit; In response to the OP i couldn't agree more. I learnt far more from him telling me then i ever would have had i just lost my license via a camera. Fair enough it would still have been a wake up call but having the officer tell me what damage i would do at those speeds, the dangers of driving fast and what he has seen when small cars (like my saxo) hit an object at speed shook me up so badly. Result; one hell of a reformed driver (who passes what he was told on), without taking a massive chunk of his life being taken away.

Re: Traffic Cops aren't all that bad.

So, before the cop pulled you over and talked to you, you didn't realise to was dangerous to drive fast? Happy to hear it helped you but it's not something I can relate to, I know the risks of driving, and the whole time I'm behind the wheel I'm judging the road to decide for my self what speed is safe to drive at, and that's the speed limit I abide by.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Look, almost everyone speeds now and again! Are the national speed limits the right ones? Do you think 70 on a motorway is slow? I think they could up it on a motorway to at least 80.

traffic cops are horrible little creatures! :EXTREME ANGER!:
on my way to work the other morning.. already in a rush. but not breaking the speed limit at all.
got my insurance, tax and everything in the car with me.
but still they stopped me at the side of the road for 25 minutes nearly while they 'checked' everything.
then gave me some stupid little slip that said they'd stopped me to give to my employers.
    what was the point?

Re: Traffic Cops aren't all that bad.

Not aimed at the OP, but it never ceases to amaze me how motorists seem to think they have a god given right to break laws because in there eyes there silly or the police 'should be catching real criminals'. I'd rather see a cop give someone a good talking to and quite likely stopping them from having a nasty accident one day, not a waste of police time at all. And fair play to the OP for taking it on board.
In the internets, no one can hear you sarcasm.

Unfortunately they're not a joke, they've been lowered in areas where motorists have proven, time and time again that they cause accidents. It's done so that your average motorist is given more time to think and react.

Also, don't forget that *you* might feel confident with driving at 100mph, but do you really trust the rest of the traffic around you to do that speed? The reason the speed limits are what they are is mostly they have to work for the lowest common demoninator.

My dad's career as a pathologist is twenty odd years' worth of reasons that speed limits are too high if anything.
