    Kettle leads... do they breed?

By kettle lead I mean the sort you plug into your PSU, monitor and other consumer electronics equipment.

I'm having a clear-out prior to moving in 10 days or so. I have a box of old hardware and cables for pretty much any eventuality. During throwing away old useless boxes it's apparent that I've amassed about 30 kettle leads.

WHERE have they all come from? Are the breeding or something?

You have hoarding disease (probably like the rest of us). I was attempting to clear out some bits the other day and found I have 10 SATA cables. I don't have space in both of my PCs combined to fit another 10 HDDs but for some reason I can't manage to throw them away.

Oh and I 'only' have 4 spare kettle leads

    They breed, yes

Then they all disappear when you need a spare

QFT, one minute you have a boxload, then when you need one, you can't find one for love nor money.

Never mind kettle leads - what about all those neatly coiled nice long network cables that you put away tidily, only to find that when you need one you have some mess of tangled spaghetti? How the hell does THAT happen?

Splash, that i why i have a good selection of tie-wraps and I also keep the little wire ties the cables originally came with

I have stacks of SATA, IDE, flaoppy and molex splitters. There is no way I'll use them all but I just can't bring myself to throw them out. Seems such a waste.

Network and 1/4 inch audio cables do exactly the same thing in my house.

Oh god, I must have about 20 regular SATA cables and a bunch of SAS cables too.

Hex is right though, when you need them, they disappear, despite their massive quantities.

Exactly the same as me. All that stuff that comes with motherboards are usually the biggest contributors. Yet, as mentioned above, even when tied up they still get tangled. Finding what I (or as is most often the case, someone else) want is one thing; freeing it and getting it out is another!

I thought it was just me who had that problem!!!

A couple of weeks ago I couldnt find a kettle lead anywhere in the house.

Friday i went looking for a figure 8 lead(the type that go in stereos etc) Couldnt find any of them but found about 10 kettle leads

I've just got a whole draw full of random cables which can be anything from SATA to HDMI up to Kettle Leads.

Yet when ever i want a cable i can never find the one i want.

Re: Kettle leads... do they breed?

In my loft, I have a large packing case FULL of cables. It has followed me around my various house moves in the last 10 years or so. Before it went into the loft this time I took the time and effort to sort them into:
    • PC
    • Guitar
    • Hi-Fi
    • Video
    • Power
    • Other
