    London to Brighton Bike Ride

Anyone from here doing the London to Brighton Bike Ride this year or have any friends who are doing it? Bravely (or stupidly!), my friend and I decided that it would be a good idea to give it a go and despite being woefully unprepared for what I believe to be a mammoth task (54 miles over not very flat land) we're very much looking forward to D-Day this coming Sunday. I just hope we're quick enough to be able to get back in time for Top Gear haha.

For those who are unaware, the aim is to raise as much money as possible for the British Heart Foundation and we've managed to get roughly £300 between us so far, which isn't bad for a couple of 17 year olds especially when our target was only £250. Anyway, here's our Just Giving page should anyone be feeling particularly philanthropic: http://www.justgiving.com/michaelandjon1

EDIT: More info here if anyone's interested

Oh yes, I've already been warned about that - my aim is to get up it without getting off my bike and walking it

    Thanks

54 miles? Piece of cake. I used to do that for an afternoon's jaunt. 95-odd miles from Southampton back to SE London did me in a bit.

Good luck. I might do it next year, but Sunday is my birthday and I'll be suffering a hangover.

I'm not doing it, but perhaps I'll give you a wave as you (almost inevitably, despite the route not being published) ride through my village.

Re: London to Brighton Bike Ride

I've not done the London to Brighton event before but I've cycled there once and cycled there and back once taking a shorter 45mile route which doesn't go up Ditchling Beacon. Out of interest I just did a quick google to get an idea of how steep it is. One website claims that the average gradient is 8.7% with a maximum of 10.6%, an ascent of 174m and distance of about 2km. Doesn't sound too bad to be honest. Best thing to do is just stick it in an easy gear and spin up. Since it's about 50miles in make sure you pace yourself beforehand and take a couple of bananas and plenty of water.

I did Dragon Ride last Sunday (an 81mile cyclosportive in Wales) which has three ~500m ascents. The last one came at about 60miles in and had an average gradient of about 6.5% and went on for 4.1miles. That really wasn't much fun until I went down the other side which was 4.1miles down hill For Dragon Ride I did pretty much no training. For about 9months the only cycling I did was to uni which was about 2miles there with the 2nd mile being up a very very steep hill (max gradient was about 19-20%). For about a month after my exams I did no cycling at all until a week before the event where I did two 26mile cycles. By pacing myself on the ride I managed to get round ok and even spent the last 13miles going flat out reaching speeds of 25+mph. So what I'm trying to say in a very long winded way is that you'll be fine if you're sensible about it

Good luck and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!

Re: London to Brighton Bike Ride

Makes me feel bad that all I've done was a 10k-ish ride around London last weekend. Still, I'm sure riding to work and back does some good as well.

You need to really get your act together if you want to get a place, especially if you do it by post (like I had to due to my age). We signed up as fast at the postal service allowed and I'm still only 24,962th out of 27,000.
