    I hate government

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8102756.stm

    Tax every bleedin' thing....bloody leeches.

I'm no anarchist, and in all honesty I don't mind paying an additional 50p if I get super fast broadband super quick.....but I'm so tired of tax after tax after tax.

    makes me angry, s'all.

    Re: I hate government

We could do with getting faster internet sorted out, but I get the impression that this tax is aimed more at getting 2Mb broadband available to people living in the middle of nowhere, which isn't nearly as enticing as fibre-optic for all

I wonder if we get a cut of the profits when Virgin Media, Sky, BT etc etc make a fortune charging for the services that will use the lines we are paying to install! Seems only fair tbh!

    Re: I hate government

As someone with a frankly dreadful line, I welcome this with open arms - nobody is interested in fixing the problem, largely because BT won't guarantee any meaningful minimum service - this will change that, and ensure that I can get a half decent connection for once..

£6 a year is nothing, I'd quite happily pay several times that if it could resolve things for me..

    Re: I hate government

I was under the impression that people like Sky and TalkTalk made no profit from their ADSL provision. Its always part of their full money plan. This is why they can be so cheap.

They tax, they spend, they spend, they spend, they spend, they spend.

Whoever voted for these muppets really need to ask themself some long hard questions.

    Re: I hate government

see i wouldnt mind paying the extra 50p but theres just few little things that get me

legal and regulatory attack on digital piracy
NO i dont agree, piracy is part off life and if it didnt exist we would all be paying £1000 for a film at the shop

and secondly im a extiscali customer (moved to what ever they are now) and service with them is horrible (read my internet specs <---) and i think a good internet is a good provider not a goverment run insentive scheme, i think this is blatentely another way off stealing hard earned money from people

    where is i disagree button?

Whose life exactly? Yes it happens, and in part I agree with you. Piracy has lowered the cost we pay for goods. I remember when it used to be like £20 for an album. Now its £10-15. Same with movies.

If the government is going to do this, the free service should be restricted. because you don't want your unemployed sitting around all day downloading porn and file sharing. If they want the full blown service, they pay extra for it.

So why are people complaining that it's the higher prices that increased piracy?

Umm no, the prices primarily were lowered because someone finally noticed a loophole in the taxation laws that let them operate a business from the Channel Islands that meant they could offer cut price DVD's, games and music over the Internet. The high street stores were forced to lower their prices to compete, one price war later, couple of businesses went under and we were left saving a few quid per item that used to be spent running a store, paying staff, and so on.

Anyhow, back to the original point, what's wrong with the government is it has lots and lots of ideas on how to make things better. What it lacks is a group of people who look at these individual ideas and consider their overall effect and what happens if you apply them all at once. Sure, the idea of getting some extra cash to fund the country's developement sounds like a good idea, but not when you look at the huge profit margins of some of the ISP's, or stop to consider it's coming at a time when many people have very very little money.

Basically I don't *hate* the government, I dispair that any system based on popularity and public opinion can really work. I'd much rather see the country run like a company, with regional offices sorting out local issues and a central office that sets general policy and people who are appointed based on their ability to do the relevant job, so we get a good negotiator dealing with foriegn policy, a lawyer or judge to oversee law and order, an economist to oversee the budget and so on.
