    Video editing software help!?

    Hi,
Wasn't sure where to post this but anyway....
I have just came back from a weeks skiing trip and I have some video that i would like to edit. I have transferred the video to my PC and I have Sonic MyDVD.
But I want to make scenes or chapters where by I can split the current movie into chunks, as in each chapter/scene. I want to be able to play different music or no music (for commentary) at all, as at the minute in Sonic I can make scenes/chapters but can only have the same music playing through the whole movie.

So is there any better software or can I do it with Sonic?

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Lewis

What format is the video in on your PC? Mpeg?
How about demuxing the mpeg stream into video and sound (*.m2v & *.wav), cutting the video part into the sections you want, making a new *.wav file for each segment, and remuxing each segment. Then join the segments

Well it appears as a ATI player file but I'm pretty sure I chose mpeg so thats most likely. I did think about your method but only thing will take blooming ages and wanted to make it look fancy with fancy menu and animations as new scenes came on.

    Thanks

    Ulead DVD Workshop 2

With out a doubt I've went through all the DVD software I could find not that long ago - I needed it to make a DVD Showreel of my 3D stuff.

It's easy, straight forward, drag and drop and does lots of little things that can make rather a cool looking DVD: motion backgrounds, motion menus and subtitles.
For adding music to movie clips I used Adobe Premier but I think you can do it to some degree in ulead now (I started with 1.2, 2 has loads more features).

Both of which are availabe for 30 trial.

I use Pinnacle's Studio 8. Easy to use, will do all the things you've listed.

I tried a 'lite' version of Ulead DVD Workshop, came with a grafix card I think and yes, it was good, but the version I had was limited, would only do low-res as I remember, and as I already had the Pinnacle software, I was loathe to shell out for another package. What I saw was good though.

If you do go for Pinnacle, make sure you apply latest patch, it smoothed out a helluva lot of bugs.

Na the trail is a 30 day full blowen version, except some minor limitations on the amounts of menus and on the menu loop times.
It's changed a lot in the last couple of versions as well:

regardless of what you use, you have the ability to import your source media, stitch it and cut it!
I come from an Avid background, but have used pinnacle, canopus products, adobe premiere - in fact I think it's fair to say I've played with all of them.
They all do what it says on the tin - the pinnacle studio being the most widely distributed is quite easy to get to grips with.
Just define a project at the same aspect ratio of your video clip - did you shoot PAL or NTSC, cinema mode or 4.3, or native widescreen - all completely different res and pixel aspect ratios.
It's easy enough to look it up in the manual for your camera.
Define a project which matches that exactly, import all the media...
Stitch at will. I think they provide an interface to sonic - so you can just export your project to sonic dvd without the intermediate stuffing about.
Either way it has the ability to create your menus, fly in text etc.
Any product you choose can do this, just depends on the plugins to "proper" dvd authoring tools.

Good grief. Ulead's Studio DVD Workshop 2 costs £258.61. Here tis

Whereas their Video Studio is a quite reasonable £51.72 Link here

Pinnacle Studio 8 is similarly priced at around £50.00. If you don't need all the professional effects and already have DVD burning software such as Nero, I'd say it would be OK to go for one of the cheaper options.

And Pinnacle Studio 9.0 is out now I notice.

I have Adobe Premier, V5.0 I think, but have never used it.

Think you'd eitehr need Adobe Premier or Ulead Mediastudio, Ulead Videostudio might be able to do the job as well though(music for individual chapters etc) and that ones cheaper..

I use TMPGEnd DVD Author as well, simple and basic but does the job..
