    The civilised game of tennis...

...and the squealing that the place. Im not a massive fan of watching it on TV but i do when its on, however over the last few years the grunting & squealing (mainly be the women oddly enough) has got to the point where it is down right ridiculous, especially from the likes of the William's sisters (who seem more man then i am) and Sharapova.

For such a civilised and usually up market game im surprised they have been allowed to let it continue. Can anyone explain to me why they haven't been told to knock it off or face point deductions?

Surely it's the success that matters? So long as it brings the best of their performance, and does not distract the opponent (don't think there have been complaints), then it's just part of the game IMO.

    tend to agree.

dont see what all the fuss is about with all the grunting. surely it is not that bad after all in cricket a bowler will deliberately berate the batsman the aussies were famous for saying some real nasty stuff during a match.

Or all the swearing in football we dont hear it beacuse of the 50,000 cheering fans but it's pretty easy to lip read everytime someone gets booked or a free kick given

I just find it so off putting, i don't understand how it would help their game as its one thing to let air out or make some noise but is it really necessary to squeal? Iv played tennis for several years and I never once felt it necessary or could understand why they make such a racket (). It certainly gets to the point where i will change channels to something else or search for a different game.

Surprised im the only one actually.

Your not the only one who hates it!! There was a young female player who was criticised in the papers for her squeal (think it was more than the decibel reading of an F1 car lol) She then hit back saying she needs too etc etc But since starting her first match this week she has not been squealing!! Its not need at all I mean the men don't apart from the occasional one.

Re: The civilised game of tennis...

There was a thing on the Wimbledon highlights about this very topic a couple of hours ago. And it is ridiculous, the commentator (not Henman or McEnroe) said that it sounds like she's got a spike being driven into her foot. And both Henman and McEnroe criticised women for squealing that loud, saying that they don't do it in other games and it's just unprofessional.

I didn't catch her name, but the worst offender was clocked at 109dB - 10 below an airliner taking off.

Re: The civilised game of tennis...

I was listening to radio 5 and one of the tennis commentators was saying that the grunting/screaming helps to contract the diaphragm which means they can hit the ball harder.

The problem is that some players are taking it to extremes. There`s a 16 year old girl who screams like she`s been shot whenever she hits the ball. She got booed at the french open for it

Yeah, same principles as breathing out when punching will give you more power, but every boxer doesn't sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cScJZqKpMq4
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

I have no objection with a grunt when playing and kind of sport - to be its just agression and shows that you want to win. But when it gets to the point of a certain Russian - Maria Sharapova sqealing and shouting at 109db then its just damn right insane!
Pittsburgh steelers, maimi hurricanes, Wisconsin badgers, Bristol Rovers, Man United - thats right i love sports
