BBC "tightens it's grip on taste"

    http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2009/0..._grip_on_taste

The BBC has issued tough new guidelines on taste, which will apply to any new comedy programmes.

The clampdown means more swearing is likely to be exorcised – even after the 9pm watershed – while comedians making programmes will have to sit down with executives for a discussion about the ‘taste and tone’ of the show.
What a load of patronising nonsense. When you have to start justifying the use of certain words and the tone of the show, you run the danger of making it insufferably bland just in case some people (that aren't going to watch it anyway) find it offensive. For Christ's sake we know that Russel Brand and Jonathan Ross made a stupid mistake, but creativity shouldn't be stifled just because two people did something insensitive.

    LMFAO

That's the beauty of this country. We're now so damn scared of offending anyone that common sense has gone out the window and everything has to be checked and double checked incase there is the remote chance of offending somebody.

And the other view is that that's the beauty of this country - we're now so damn dis-respectful that common decency has gone out the window and people are baying for entertainment at someone else's expense.

It's good to debate it, but I think both sides have a point.

Sigh... I liked Steve Hughes part in the Comedy Roadshow about people being offended http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAGJpISVERg#t=3m42s
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Also bare in mind that the most extreme intepretation of this story is going to be reported and publisized. It wouldn't make a very good story if they reported a more rational and moderate take on it.

It depends on your definition of the word 'mistake'. Anyway, the Andrew Sachs situation has been discussed to death on every messageboard ever, so I don't want to repeat old arguments.

Re: BBC "tightens it's grip on taste"

The complaints system doesn’t work, it takes a minority of people who are offended to complain, thus making the BBC feel as if they have done something wrong and need to change something, what about the millions who saw nothing wrong, and like some swearing and rude vulgar comedy?

The perfect complaints system work like this:-

    How many viewers? - 3,034,000
    How many complaints? - 23
Did 10% of the viewing audience complain?

If yes, change something, if no continue as before.

Just because 20 odd people write in and complain about something doesn’t mean 3 million people feel the same way, if someone is really offended they will write in and complain, otherwise they don’t really care.

Its time they stop trying to make "everyone" happy.

Oh dear I am glad they are putting to use all the funds they recieve from our TV licenses ....

The thing is though peoples tastes and opinions very therefore one person might find any jokes in good humour whilst others might find them offensive so really cant see this working unless they get people with no sense of humour to monitor things.

Well if they do go too far with this it could end up going sour, surely thier selling point, as with other channels is this kind of thing to an extent.

The will of 'the people' eh? Personally I'd shy away from using language like that, given where 'the will of the people' has got us in fairly recent history:

    http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=tri...e+will&x=0&y=0

In any case it's rubbish. What they misjudged was the ability of News International, the Barclay Brothers and the DMGT to whip up anti-BBC feeling among their readership. TWO people, that's 2 people, complained initially. 30,000 complained in total, so that's 29,998 people who complained having almost certainly never heard the show.

I very nearly cancelled my TV licence (and Virgin Media subscription) over the whole incident. I watch about 2 hours telly a week anyway. Only the very fierce protestations of my wife prevented me from doing so.

I nearly did exactly the same thing when they sacked Angus Deayton from HIGNIFY for snorting coke and using prossies. HIGNIFY was about the only BBC program I watched at the time, and without Deayton it remains a pretty poor shadow of its former self. So great....they ruined a world class comedy program because a bunch of hard-of-thinking ******s objected to a bloke spending his leisure time doing something that didn't hurt anybody apart from his wife.

As a liberal, where's my voice in all of this?

This is the same voice that expressed upset at the disrespectful jokes in the MJ thread?

Not having a go at you personally Rave, but it does give an example of the other side of the story - disrespect is okay to some people and not others, and the amount and subject of that disrespect also affects different people differently.

Well sure. As the rather good comedian Mblaster linked to said: "What's wrong with being offended?". I found it a bit tasteless, and posted that I thought MJ didn't really deserved to be remembered like that, but I didn't mention any posters personally, I didn't report any posts to the mods nor even make any suggestion that such a course of action would be appropriate. I just stated that I thought some of it was a bit heartless.

Nobody AFAIK really thought that it was fine that Brand and Ross left those answerphone messages (though I daresay in my drunker and angrier moments on here I might have suggested as such ). It was rude. But then Sachs was rude in not answering the phone when he'd agreed to.

The solution to the problem should have been a shamefaced apology. Not the tabloids stoking up a mass of rabid anger, leading to two people resigning.

I am, and have been for a long time, utterly browned off with self-appointed moral guardians telling people what they can and can't say or do. Example: anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that the prohibition of drugs is a massive failure that causes far more problems than it ever solved. But woe betide anyone famous who points that out in public. They clearly want everyone to die like Leah Betts. It's a self-fulfilling circle of idiocy.

Well he got sacked because it happened again. And they had a point, how could Deayton make any sort of joke about a guest on the show when they would obviously just say "well what about you".

I agree about the show being worse now but I don't think it could have continued in the same form. Would love to see him as a guest host though.
