What a load of patronising nonsense. When you have to start justifying the use of certain words and the tone of the show, you run the danger of making it insufferably bland just in case some people (that aren't going to watch it anyway) find it offensive. For Christ's sake we know that Russel Brand and Jonathan Ross made a stupid mistake, but creativity shouldn't be stifled just because two people did something insensitive. The BBC has issued tough new guidelines on taste, which will apply to any new comedy programmes.
The clampdown means more swearing is likely to be exorcised – even after the 9pm watershed – while comedians making programmes will have to sit down with executives for a discussion about the ‘taste and tone’ of the show.
