    Can someone please explain...

    Hi all

Why does the european competition competition have a problem with microsoft bundling IE with windows when people are free to download their choice of browser and install it. Also why are other browser manufacturers even bothered, when their browsers are given away free? Where do they gain by having more people use their browser? Je ne comprends pas?!

    Merci Bien

because they build the cost of IE into the price of Windows maybe?

The argument is that you have a variety of manufacturers with competing products, say IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc. Now instead of giving them all an equal shot at the market, you force everyone to install one of them, and then say if you don't like it, you can try the competition, which we won't tell you about or help you get.

Basically, MS are using their market dominance with one product to give an unfair advantage to another product, and since that market dominance covers about 95% of the possible market in the EEA the EC rule it has an effect on the people residing in the EEA.

And to be accurate, the EC have no problem with MS bundling IE with windows at all - they only asked that MS also give people a choice of alternative browsers when installing Windows. MS then sulkily said well fine, we won't put any browser in at all then.

    Re: Can someone please explain...

I don't know about all free browsers, but Mozilla was making so much money they had to drop their non-profit status(90mil revenue and only 15mil expenses in 2006 and they've grown a lot since then). It's not something that was immediately evident; even to Mozilla themselves, but there is a lot of money in browsers.

The browser wars are big business now. Hence the EU sticking it's nose in.

EDIT: Mozilla financial statement for 2006 http://www.docstoc.com/docs/2667244/...cial-statement for budding accountants.

EDIT2: My bad, I don't believe they actually dropped non-profit status just yet. Though they might have to at some point.

    Re: Can someone please explain...

I don't understand the problem really. Windows is owned by microsoft so why shouldn't they be allowed to bundle their own software with it? They shouldn't have to say "Here's our browser, but you can also try Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc." I'm not going to make a piece of software then tell everyone using it that there are better alternatives. Microsoft want people to use their products, even if there are better alternatives.

Including no browser is just a big hassle for people who don't have a clue about computers. For a lot of people using IE is just fine for what they need. For others they prefer using another browser and they are incredibly easy to find on the internet.

If you've been on the internet for more than a year, then I'd be shocked if you didn't know there were alternatives to IE.

From the way I understand it, it's like IKEA getting mad because a company is selling people houses without giving them an IKEA leaflet.

Edit: My understanding is probably totally wrong though .

    Re: Can someone please explain...

This is the way i see it:
There is users that think the blue E is "the internet"
for this reason most users dont know other browsers exist. since the market share of IE is so high web devolopers write rubbish websites that only work in IE etc etc.
its getting better recently since people like us are telling our friends about browsers such as opera and firefox.

    Re: Can someone please explain...

Why should it be up to Microsoft to advertise products they don't own? As a company, Microsoft wants everyone to use their browser since theirs is the best (in their eyes of course), so they want everyone to use theirs. Advertising other browsers just makes it look like their browser isn't the best so people will be more inclined to choose others. If you see a store selling their own brand of soup, but next to it a poster showing a different store where you can buy better soup, then of course people will go off and buy the better soup. Less people using IE the better, but not for Microsoft.

I can totally understand why they would rather not include any browser than advertise others alongside theirs.

(Excuse my terrible analogies haha )
