£41.5 million for the monarchy?
Bargain!
Yes, I really do believe that spending that money on the Royal Family is worth it. I would suspect they bring in more than that though tourism revenue in London alone.
I'm not a fan of the actual Royal Family, the ones that have titles at the moment, but as an institution I believe they are an important part of the country and who we are to be British. It would be a great loss for the country as a whole is they were removed.

Probably a lot less then some MP's have been claiming in expenses, second jobs and the like...

I agree, I'm no Royalist by any stretch of the imagination but in recent years it's almost become fashionable to slate the Royals.
They themselves will bring in a lot of tourism revenue but there are other things. For example Prince Charles, often thought as a muppet, did (still does?) a lot of oil business abroad for the country. The others have plenty of involvement for charities.
They're at this age, much more experienced than the M.P.s who tend not to last very long in their jobs. We're lucky that most of them participate actively.
It really must be terrible for her![]()
Couldnt agree more with some of the posts, whilst im sceptical about how far royal money flows in terms of how much money gets passed to relatives of relatives of the Queen etc, Royalty has a place in this country and whilst doubling it might be a bit much the request should be taken seriously. The sheer tourism factor alone justifies it (who hasn't paid to visit a building directly related to the Monachy?) aswell as the sense of pride & patriotism that is generated, both in this country and on a wider global scale!
No, they aren't.
First, the Civil list is to defray costs of official business, as Head of State.
Make no mistake, if we abolished the role of the Queen and head of state, she'd get replaced by a President. Why should we think that President Blair, or President Brown, or whomever would be any cheaper?
And the Queen is an institution, and widely respected in most of the world. A President wouldn't carry the same prestige, and the pomp and circumstance wouldn't do the same for Britain Ltd abroad.
Next, the Civil List isn't money for the royal family to live the high life. It's for maintenance of official properties, and for official duties. It's for hosting official parties for foreign dignitaries, and it's for attending such events from other countries. As often as not, such visits are at the behest of the Foreign Office.
When was the last time we were told what the Prime Minister spends on such activities? Yet people don't get hot under the collar about that.
Finally, the Civil List is effectively a contract. The Crown surrendered control of the Crown Estates to the state, to run and to receive the revenue from. In return, the state pays the Queen's expenses for those official duties and maintenance. I bet the Queen would dearly love to cancel that contract, and we don't have to pay the Civil list and she gets the revenue from the Crown Estates.
The Civil List doesn't amount to us funding the Queen. It amounts to her subsidising the state. Roughly, she gives up £200m a year in income, and control over a very valuable asset base, and we give her £40 million of it back. Utter bargain if you ask me.
