    Exclamation Sunscreen for the summer

Most people know that you should put sunscreen on.. but did you know about the UVA/UVB nuances? I didn't, so just in case you didn't, take heed.

Everyone knows about SPF - or how much protection against burning a sunscreen gives you compared to normal skin. Everyone should know as well that factor 15 is the minimum you should really consider.

But what I didn't know was that burning is pretty much caused by UVB only, and hence SPF only measures protection against UVB, which causes:

So yeah, not nice, but not actually the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Now look at UVA, which causes:

Worryingly, creams etc. good at UVB protection, and high SPF, might have terrible protection from UVA. And as they're stopping you burning you might stay out in the sun longer too. So look at the back of the bottle. You should see a circle with UVA and a number of stars up to five (and a rating - 5 stars is ultra, 4 is superior, 3 is good etc.) Make sure you get the highest UVA protection possible, regardless of which SPF you usually use.

I was suprised that my supermarkets own brand cream actually had far higher UVA protection than the fashion cream brands, despite their SPFs going right up to 50+.

    Take care out there

Currently, safer and more effective derivatives of PABA, such as octyl dimethyl PABA (padimate O), are more commonly used.

and don't forget anything above 30 (or the 30+ some brands make) is pointless, all the 50 and 50+ stuff is no more effective than 30. In fact in the USA and Australia which obviously get a lot more sun than we do they can't even sell anthing above factor 30 - on the basis of "prove it works and you can sell it" they can't therefore they can't.

Interesting stuff I didnt know about any of that, due to having very pale skin I can't really go near sun but I will be making sure I check the UVA protection factor out from now on.

    Re: Sunscreen for the summer

yep, and the same quote says:

PABA is an essential nutrient for some bacteria and is sometimes called Vitamin Bx[1]. In humans, PABA is normally made by E-coli[2] in the colon and therefore PABA from food is not normally essential to human health. PABA is therefore not officially classified as a vitamin. PABA is an intermediate in bacterial synthesis of folate. Although humans lack the ability to synthesize folate from PABA, that is also normally done by E-coli.[3] PABA is sometimes marketed as an essential nutrient for use whenever normal PABA synthesis by intestinal bacteria is insufficient.
Symptoms of PABA deficiency may include scleroderma (hardening of skin), weeping eczema (moist eczema), skin infections, and patchy pigment loss in skin (vitiligo).[4] Food sources of PABA include liver, brewer's yeast (and unfiltered beer), kidney, molasses, and whole grains.

Amazingly the Boots own brand stuff (Soltan) is 5 star rated and cheap(ish) to boot. I like their "Once" stuff as it allows you to go in the water and not have to reapply it afterwards - perfect for me!
