    Grammar police.

This is one of my pet peeves, i.e. "I brought a new fan from scan"... NO, you didn't bring it, you bought it!

Two very different words (via one letter) yet many people mix them up?

    Why?

    Gah!

Bought: having purchased something, past tense of buy...
Brought: To have taken something with you, past tense of bring...

It's like saying pomegranate when you mean sausage!!

I don't care if people think I am being a grammar Nazi, it is VERY annoying (to me... )

Anyone else, or with similar phrases?

    Re: Grammar police.

I used to be a Grammar Nazi, but I learned quite quickly that you set yourself up for ridicule by being one. One typo and everyone's on your case.

But yeah. English is a hard language to learn for someone who grew up speaking a more sensibly ordered language, but for a native British person? Give me a break! It's not hard, read some classic literature and pay attention to how all the sentences are constructed. I got two Cs in English Language and Literature at GCSE. That didn't even put me in the top 50% of all the people who took that exam.

I am a fervent grammar nazi, but only in respect of one poster on here ..... me. Keeping an eye on my own typo's keeps me busy enough that I don't worry about anyone else's.

Exactly - it's got nothing to do with grammar, so why the grammar police are worried I don't know It's just a typo or misspelling

Typos (and I'm bad at those, as a two fingered trypist) don't bother me particularly, but poor grammar and punctuation do, or mixing of words like there and their. Worst (to my mind) is txtspk wch u no tks tme 2 rd. And slang speech is gonna reely gt up my nose.

    Re: Grammar police.

I've said this many times before but it is "more than" and not "more then".

Apostrophe catastrophes are another - an apostrophe signifies possession or omission.

Txt spk too, I tend to ignore those threads/posts now.

    loose = opposite of tight
lose = opposite of win or when some thing becomes lost

    you can't "loose fat"

Such a simple error but it is so common.

My English is far from perfect, but at least I try!

    Re: Grammar police.

Corr... what is it with grammar on forums lol

We're only here on this rock floating round that lovely burning gas ball for a very minute time overall when you look at the bigger picture. As such there are better things to do than worry about the odd typo, misplaced comma or full stop.

I'm not too concerned about poor grammar, but when it means that you have to spend 10 minutes reading a 3 line post - That bothers me!

seriously.. some people just get wound up over absolutely nothing.

"I brought a new fan from scan" - isn't it pretty easy to work out what they're saying?

    get over it?

People post bad English -> Kids read bad English -> Kids start writing/speaking bad English -> Kids grow up -> ... -> Global anarchy

A lot of people can't tell the difference between incorrect and correct English (myself included in some instances). Good luck in ever getting a good job if your English sucks like this.

    There are always exceptions
But you have a good reason. I doubt an employer would accept "I am from the internets, I has only used txt spk" as an excuse.

I work for a French company and some of the French guys there can speak/write English better than some of the English people here. It is a disgrace IMO.
