WTF, i was watching the racing from Brands, never knew that. That's a really bad, it really looked like a nothing accident at the time.
So used to watching racing where guys get up and walk away from horrific looking crashes makes it all the more suprising.
Really shocking, RIP Henry Surtees.
Edit, news page. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77088
Looking at it back those wheels come off really easy, i know it's F2s first year and all but i thought wheel tethers were the norm for quick single seaters. Wheels seem to come off with any impact.

Very sad news. RIP Henry.
Apparently the cars have F1-standard head protection and wheel tethers:

It's a completely freak accident as far as I can see, though clearly there wasn't much runoff on the corner- Brands is a great track but not a particularly safe one IMO. But, at the end of the day, ragging a car with a power-to-weight ratio considerably higher than a Veyron around a track will always have some inherent dangers.
RIP Henry, and my sincerest sympathies to his family, especially his father who is one of the true greats of British motorsport.
Was watching the race and saw it happen, and thought he would be lucky to be seriously injured - such was the nature of the incident.
RIP Henry Surtees, not much else I can think to say that would be appropriate - except that we must also remember that he was racing a 400bhp single seater at the time, no doubt having the time of his life - there are far worse ways to go.
I'm sure there will be an investigation into the cars though, it isn't the first time this season that a wheel has come off an F2 car - I think it happened at Brno too. Given that they are built to 2005 F1 standards, with wheel tethers as Rave said. Said 2005 F1 wheel tethers kept Kimi Raikkonen's front right wheel on his car at the Nurburgring in '05 when it cause his suspensions to collapse - I wonder if there is an issue with the design of the cars that reduces the effectiveness of the tethers.

RIP Henry Surtees, Condolences to the family.
Failures do happen, as do accidents, but the wheel should really have stayed tethered to the car. Perhaps, as kidzer says, there will be an investigation. If its not the first time, then something is stopping the tethers doing their job.
