    Swapmeets - any thoughts?

    Hi everyone,

While I was digging through my hordes of aging / spare hardware it occurred to me that I will probably never use 90% of it, and that some of it might be of use to other people interested in technology. That got me thinking: wouldn't it be cool if there was somewhere I could go, with a big bag of spare cables and odds and ends, and let people take anything that'd be useful to them, and they could bring big bags of spare stuff and I could take anything they didn't want that'd be useful to me.

So, does anyone else think it might be interesting to have some kind of Hexus swapmeet, where we can chat, drink, and swap spare bits of random stuff that we don't need anymore (perhaps we could find a charity that could use / sell anything that doesn't get swapped so we don't have to cart it all home)?

logistically, would be better to post stuff to each other. don't think we are a big enough community to get any sort of quantity of people to meet up to sway a few usb cables tbh

we have enough trouble with something as awesome and unmissable as the LAN

Have you heard of freecycle? I know it is not technology centred as such, but maybe if you had any more general things such as old printers etc, you could find a use for it through the freecycle network?

    Re: Swapmeets - any thoughts?

You know, I'd forgotten I'd started this thread. Judging by the number of replies perhaps we're not a big enough community (YET, dammit ) to make this workable.

There is the Classifieds section, in which you can already post things for free if you want, and I've posted a few things on freecycle in the past - the idea was more to have a social event, at which hardware was also exchanged. Then again, I'm coming from the background of having been on a BBS on which *anything* was an excuse for meeting up somewhere and drinking...

    Now you're talking.
But based on my experience hard to do on a big scale. Easy for a few people who all live/work nearby.

    Re: Swapmeets - any thoughts?

Mono always seemed to be able to rustle up enough people for 6 - 8 big (30+ people) meets a year, plus frequent (several a month) local meets in a number of cities, but I guess that takes a certain critical mass of regular users...

    Re: Swapmeets - any thoughts?

I've been going through all my old hardware recently, if it doesn;t work/fit in current motherboards then it goes in the bin. I chucked out something like 10 AGP gfx cards the other day, ranging from Vanta LT's to GeForce 4's.

Nobody wants them when I've tried to sell them, so in the bin sack they went which is living in the boot of my car till I decided to goto the dump.

There's some nasty chemicals in those PCB's. I'd see if they have an electronics skip when you go.
    I remember the GF4...I couldn't afford it...

    Re: Swapmeets - any thoughts?

I text a load of local friends last time I got rid of stuff, about 4/5 boxes of old hard drives, gfx cards, memory etc etc.

Would of been nice to get together, few drinks and swap stuff with ppl...
