    Bank transfer problems

    Hey guys,

I sold something on a forum, and sent the guy my details as usual.

He replied a day later and said he'd paid. I checked, nothing there. I thought that was strange as it's usually instant.

I decided to go to bed, check the next day. I checked this morning, still nothing.

I then went on to check my PMs and found I'd given him the wrong sort code. (one number wrong).

I rang my bank as soon as I realised to ask, the woman didn't seem to understand what had happened, but did say that if the money had left my account then it couldn't be retrieved, so I assume this applies to the buyer too.

So, basically, is there a way the buyer can retrieve the funds or am I screwed?

I'm not bothered about it, it's only £9, but I'd like to have the £9 obviously...

    Thanks

    Re: Bank transfer problems

I would have thought that the transfer would have failed and the funds would never have left his bank.

I was under the impression (maybe errornously!) that the sode code, account number and name had to all match?

    Re: Bank transfer problems

I have done this before. The money whizzed around the banking ether for a few days before arriving back to me. I just had to do the transfer again with the right details!

    Re: Bank transfer problems

I think that if the money is sent to a non-existant account, it goes into the receiving bank's suspense account and is then returned to the originator. Not sure if that would apply if the sort code given was incorrect, but the account number was valid, but it should still be possible to get the error reversed.

    Re: Bank transfer problems

Hmm, thanks for that guys. I've notified the person and he is going to his bank today to try and sort it. Hopefully it will find it's way to me.

I also was under the impression that all 3 things had to match.

    Re: Bank transfer problems

I think, but this could be wrong now.

The money gets sent to the sort code, the branch in days of old.

They then reconcile that into the account, with the use of the name + number. So its probably sitting in that sort code account, waiting for the human touch.
