How to get rid of a wasp nest.

We've just discovered that we have a wasp nest outide our back door by pur coal bunker (we don't use coal anymore) when Dad was out on the hedge trying to work on it to tidy it up, and was rather surprised to be charged at by 3 angry wasps as he has disturbed their home. He was even more surprised when he was stung by the little pains.

HE's gone off to hospital as its better to be safe than sorry, but what I want to know is how in the heck are we goign to get shot of them ? It's not like we have any kids or anything but we do have Savannah (our cat) that and I'm petrified of the wasps.

I said lets get pest control in but Mum doesn't want that

Re: How to get rid of a wasp nest.

Ring the council pest control, they'll get rid of it for about 20quid or so. Nice and easy.

Better to get a pro in to sort it out than do something daft like set fire to it or whatever.

Don't try and remove the nest though, wasps will just come back. They have to be exterminated in the nest and left because wasps won't ever come back to a dead nest.

Pest control is your best bet, there's little else you can do unless you want to live with them.

A pair of headphones round the nest with N-Dubz on repeat ought to do it.

Much as I like some of the more er.... 'radical' solutions - get the council in - they have the strong stuff, and the equipment to deliver it (NO format - NOT from outer space!)

Hospital? Council? Unless anyone is in danger of anaphlyaxis is there really any need for either? I had a wasps nest in my shed. I destroyed it with a spade when it was quiet.

I think there was a bit missing from the post title - something like "safely" or "without getting stung"! Although wasp stings are usually pretty harmless if you do have a reaction.... (and multiple stings from many enraged wasps (and you would be a bit miffed if someone took a spade to your house!) can trigger a reaction.

(I remember watching my Dad blow DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, a chlorinated hydrocarbon - now banned) into the eaves of the house we lived in using a rolled up newspaper funnel - that did the trick)

Re: How to get rid of a wasp nest.

I wouldn't pay the council anything!!

I would tape some bin liners up really well, making a blanket, attach it round the bunker securely, leaving no gaps. Make a hole in the liners and spray insecticide in there, lots, cover hole and wait.

If that doesn't work, seal up the bunker, use fill and fix foam!!

My Sarf Afrikan friend once told me he moved a hornets nest by hand, but he also says he used to daily fight naked with lions in the savanah, he might be embellishing.

Re: How to get rid of a wasp nest.

Ion cannon or Dyson before hoovering up some insect poison

Personally, I'm terrified of Wasps. 1 or 2 Wasps is enough to send me running for the hills, let alone a nest of them

Get a professional to vapourise them. Safer for your family, neighbours and Savannah

Why does your mum not want to use pest control? If its a money issue then fair enough but I hope shes not thinking of the evil Wasps. Think of the cat, won't someboy please think of the cat!

Re: How to get rid of a wasp nest.

We have a huge bees nest under our LAWN! - There is a little whole inbetween the bricks which they fly out of and in, one leaves and one goes straight back in every 1-10 seconds, it must be absolutely huge under there.

We're going to leave it, we stand basically 20 cm from the whole and they are fine about it, I've even got close with the camera and they just ignore you, if they are not attacking us, we won't attack them.
