    Desks...

Dead exciting topic I know. Basically I'm looking for a new desk for one of my family and wanted a bit of hexus advice. I need to keep the cost down, preferably below or around £120 including delivery, this might not be achievable but we'll see.

The desk will be used for uni work and will hold a 24" monitor and a second much smaller monitor, don't know the size but it's an old old 5:4 aspect ratio thing that doesn't have much of a footprint. I think the best option is a cantilever style desk and so far I've found these:

    http://www.officefurnitureonline.co....lar-desks.html

£96.60 including VAT and delivery (for the 1600mm wide one)

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80115988

Smaller desk, cheaper but you get stung on delivery so £94 including VAT and delivery

Anyone got anything better than the above two options I found through google? Or any experience with the items or similar ones?

    Re: Desks...

im afraid not pricewise mate, but i currently use a corner desk from ikea, which is situated a little too high, mainly because i'm too lazy to fix it

But, i think, for the setup i have, without the cable tidy (still in the box), the raised monitor stand (still in the box) it was around £180 mark

Currently it supports a 22" monitor, keyboard, several empty cans of lager, approx 15 dvd's. 3 empty glasses, 3 plates and various cutlery, half empty box of kleenex (hay fever, ok!) An alarm clock, a microphone, a desktop fan, an empty belkin wirelss G+ desktop card (thanks Scan) half a cadbury's caramel (the2 quid one) and 5 satellite speakers.

Tomorrow, when im sober and apt to lie a bit more (full box of kleenex and a lot less empty cans of lager), i'll even know what the name of the desk is, i think its Galleon, or Galilee, or Galafray or something

    and it costs about £180

    but it worth it

    Re: Desks...

The gallant is a whole series of desks, what size one have you got all that stuff on? And I see they do two styles of leg, A frame and T frame, which did you opt for?

    Re: Desks...

hmm, im gonna have to look out the manual thing

found it, it now makes no sense to me, seems the gallant can be curved, straight, cornered or vertical,

a bit like Fredde Mercury really

Urm, anyways, It does come in many forms, lots of additions to suit the style I suppose, but there is a corner version, with 3 T bar legs, that can be set up to look great when its not filled with crap, like mine is

    Re: Desks...

Cheapest option will probably be to buy the legs and table top separately. You'll end up with a fairly basic desk, but you get to choose the size you want, the surface you want and the legs/trestle you want. Ikea do them (basic 150cm x 75cm top with 4 legs for £28 ex delivery) and I'm sure others do too.

    Re: Desks...

Kitchen worktop of your desired length and four thick wooden legs. Sorted. Quite cheap and can look good depending on the legs and how you finish the ends or whether you hide them by making the desk fit between two walls.

Got almost exactly this from ikea the other night, except just a plain beach surface. It's really good, I would recommend especially for £28!

The trouble with that kind of open setup is that the inevitable rat's nest of cables will be fully displayed in all its glory (funny how PCs, monitors, printers etc in furniture advertising shots all seem to be self-contained and self-powered, presumably with their own internal fission reactors).

I used this el cheapo tip to good effect (requires a closed-back desk, obviously)...
