So, paint right, not the Windows app, the stuff you apply to walls

I hear wilkinsons is no good for paint, where do you get decent white wall paint from? Moved into a new flat and the walls are Post-It yellow which is pretty disgusting , will post before & after pics next week once the painting is done

In the meantime, need your advice and experience on which store i can find the best value paint

Post-It note yellow, ideal for us smokers

Was thinking of painting my room, but my landlord is an ass, so I'm not doing his job for him.

B&Q, Homebase. You're just looking for a good brand like delux, crown, F&B etc. and whichever store has it on offer.

If you have a Johnstones Trade Paint near you: (http://www.johnstonestrade.com/)

Use them, they have brilliant paint, for much cheaper than B&Q etc...

They actually know what they are doing, and they only keep primary colours on stock, which means that they mix custom colours for everything, while still being cheaper than everywhere else, the paint also covers much better than dulux etc, and is aroma free.

    ticks all the boxes

But if you do end up going to a DIY superstore, I personally prefer Crown over Dulux.

B&Q own brand isn't nearly as good.

No need to spend a fortune on the branded stuff, B&Q do some really good, thick white emulsion in Satin or Matte finish and if I remember right, it's about £12 for 10 litres. They do some cheaper "value" stuff and that is rubbish.

Re: So, paint right, not the Windows app, the stuff you apply to walls

In my experience it's not worth going too cheap on paint - it makes the job so much harder and you'll probably need an extra coat to get a good finish. Buy the best quality stuff you can afford.

Oddly, the larger Tescos often sell Dulux and the like for cheap, but the range of colours is limited - good for white though.

Re: So, paint right, not the Windows app, the stuff you apply to walls

Couldn't agree more, extensive experience has taught me that cheap paint should only be used as a basic primer for decent paint. I always have a tub of cheapo B&Q paint in for using as a watered down primer on new plaster and such.

I only use Dulux nowadays, I buy the trade stuff from a Dulux Centre nearby. Good quality paint needs less coats so works out often less expensive than 'cheap' paint in the long run once you get to know coverage rates.

Yep, get the good stuff. I wish we had gone for hardy wipe clean stuff now. We have nice colour walls but they mark like nobody's buisness!

Re: So, paint right, not the Windows app, the stuff you apply to walls

My last batch (bought with the rent reduction because I agreed to decorate my rented pit^Whouse) was from Wickes - a variety of their own-branded stuff, and all very good, plenty of coverage, decent colours, did exactly what it said on the tin (despite not being made by ronseal). All very reasonably priced too - they have a trade range that is particularly good value if you just want bog-standard paint in neutral colours like magnolia.

A vote here for the Wickes own brand trade paint... Picked up 15 litres of magnolia and the same of white for about £20... covers pretty well, doesn't need stirring and dries fairly quickly too.

Unless you're after a specific finish for child/pet reasons, I found that the Homebase own eggshell finish white gave a nice clean colour without being massively reflecting. It was enough to have white walls, without feeling you're living inside a soap powder box.
