I'm Reading - Will Be Reading.

As we HEXUS peeps are a cut abve the average pub \ chav types, we read books, not just watch the TV. As such, lets see what we are reading at the moment, and what's next on our lists. Might get some ideas on our next purchases.

Reading: The Stars' Tennis Balls (Stephen Fry)

Next on List: The Silmarillion (J.R.R Tolkien)

Never got around to reading that one, and as I've read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, thought I'd finally get around to it.

Zak edit: brave bloke....Silmarillion is pants

The long version for anyone who's bored (like me) and wants a read:
(If not scroll down for short version)

Not much of a reader here, just got to a point when i was a kid that i just stopped. I blame Roald dahl books for being too easy to read, and having too much of a pick up and put down ability. I mean i never read for long periods at a time and with his books you could just pick them up, open up at the last page you were on and get straight back into the story (haha, i remember i forced my dad to read my copy the twits once because i loved it and thought he should read it, i made him take it to work with him and everything.) but when i decided i wanted to try reading books that were longer i think the first book i went for was the hobbit back in primary school. but when i'd pick it up and try to carry on from where i'd left off, i always found myself going back a few pages and reading them again to know what was going on, and as i only ever had the attention span to read about 10pages at a time,it just got boring and i gave up because i was getting nowhere.

Since then i only remember getting stuck into 3 books, millions of magazine articles but only remember 3 books, which were some book i found on my sisters shelf one rainy sunday, Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, i got it for christmas not long after the film came out, so i thought i'd give it ago, only got about 50pages into though before i gave up. And the last book was also a christmas present, BUT I actually asked for it, it's Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men" i was always a fan of his Awful truth show and Mark thomas's comedy product on channel 4, and a couple of years ago i was looking around in tesco for a book my mum wanted for her birthday and there was Stupid White Men, i picked it up, started reading the UK introduction and before i knew it i was half way through the 1st chapter, so i got it for christmas, still not finished it though, about 100 pages left. That is because i only really read it when i have nothing else to do, like on a bus etc... which isn't often as i drive, but it goes around with me in my bag everywhere for just such an occassion. I will finish it eventually.

But this topic is really strange (hence why i've bothered to type so much, or i'm just really bored) because i was in work today and saw the teaser for the hitchhiker guide to the galaxy film and all my friends have always said it's a good book and i was laughing at it knowing the significance of the number 42 in the trailer. It really just made me want to read it. So i think i'm going to go out and get a copy, and make that my next book. Hopefully it has pick up and put down-ability, haha.

Sorry, i'm bored and got a bit carried away with my typing.

    The Short version:

Currently reading : Stupid White Men (Michael Moore)

Next Book : Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy (Douglas Adams)

Sorry, i'm bored and got a bit carried away with my typing.

P.s Vaul, my brother has always been a big Tolkien fan, and apparantly The Silmarillion is one of his hardest books to read because its really deep into Tolkien's world. He was after a really good hard back version of it for ages though so it must be good. Good luck mate.

I'm surrently reading 'A very Long Engagement' by Sebastien Japrisot. I haven't seen the film yet, and I suspect it's a very different style, but the book is brilliant!

I have just finished Field of swords by Conn Iggulden,

Now halfway through Viking, Odinn's child by Tim Severin,

I have a new Bernard Cornwell book on the shelf which I've forgotten the name of and I also have a copy of the Silmarillion (Tolkien) waiting to be read. I read the Bourne supremacy a couple of weeks back and have the Bourne Ultimatume (Robert Ludlum) ready to go as well.

Aside from that: End-to-End DSL Architectures (Cisco Press)
CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (Cisco Press)
Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition (Cisco Press)

I seem to have my head in one kind of a book or another almost permenantly at the moment. I have a significant library in my study of both technical/reference books and fiction. I like to collect the hardback editions as I'm one of those lucky people who can pick up a book a second or third time and still enjoy it so I get books that last and look good on display.

What are your favourite books and why? Mine are:

The Power of One by Bryce Courtney. It evoked just about every emotion humanly possible at one time or another. Recommended reading for just about any taste.

Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. My old stamping ground when I was in the army in the '80s. I could relate to the whole story. The man is an excellent story teller.

Anything by Bernard Cornwell, I just love the man's style.

    *AHEM*

Currently reading: Lemony Snicket - a series of unfortunate events - book 2 - the reptile room

next: Lemony Snicket - a series of unfortunate events - book 3 -The wide window

    That will be all

P.S - they sell these books in the childrens section, i know, but there is a subtle adult comedy in them that also makes them enjoyable for adults to read when they dont want something too serious to read. Also, they're a bit too scary i'd have thought, for any child under 14!

Reading Now: Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.

It is utterly complelling and while I HAD lots of book splanned to read, I'm now snookered, and I dont know what to follow it up with Its harrowing, and awesome.

    Probably next read.....err...

    bugger..I just dunno.

Need something comforting after this....maybe a kids book. Susan Cooper probably.

Vaul edit: Well, I'm going to try anyway... can't be *that* heavy going.

^^ I didn't read for a couple of months when I finished Birdsong.

Just finished Small Island, Andrea Levy. Brilliant book, humorous, warm, full of detail which draws you into the period.

Now reading the Da Vinci Code. Not the best written book I've read, but a cracking story .

I finished 'Sea Harrier over the Falklands' by Sharkey Ward about a month ago, haven't had the desire to pick up anything since.
