So, am i missing something here. Why are PC manufacturers still lame?

They've had a couple of years now, wheres unibody construction and backlit keyboards, unified product ranges that result in better product development and support, and better brand recognition?

Housemate came home with a brand new Acer monstrosity last night, they're still using the same construction and design techniques from 7+ years ago. How embarrasing

Nah i'm just frustrated that i've officially ran out of reasons to stay with PC, its just slacking so bad. Really obvious stuff, like i said, why the hell would you NOT put baclit keyboards into every laptop by now? Im typing at this very moment with my Compaq laptop with the screen pointed down at the keys so i can see them as i type

how do you defend that?? what possible excuse do PC manufacturers have, other than laziness and the fact that PC consumers are still dumb enough to pay for such outdated clunky hardware [/rant]

    Cost. On both accounts.

The mass market wants cheap stuff. It's easy for them to forget about useful features when a low price is presented to them.

Don't blame the manufacturers, it's just supply and demand.

That could be a good reason, except i dont know of any PC manufacturers who do high-end models that match the features i mentioned earlier at the same price, or nay price for that matter.

Its like the iPod situation, i waited years for Sony to get the formula right and release a good iPod alternative, eventually i just had to give up and get an iPod. Now its happening with laptops and OS

Dell will do you a backlit kb on some laptops - for a charge (£25 iirc).
generally at the bottom end though it's all about getting the prices down not adding features.

Sounds like you are really keen on having a backlit keyboard ... too keen perhaps.

Re: So, am i missing something here. Why are PC manufacturers still lame?

If my laptop blows up, with Dell I get bad customer service but with Apple, I'll probably get an angry letter from lawyers, thrown out a window and my house burnt down.

On a more serious note, my Dell isn't based on a 7 year old design, it's well built, has a great spec, awesome battery life, far cheaper than the equivalent apple product but alas, lacks an illuminated keyboard. Dammit Dell.

I believe you have missed the point, 'PC's are only lame under Apple's definition of perfection. In the same way PC users define Apple fans as smug gits.

EDIT: FFFFFFFFFUU... I need a back-light keyboard. Only had to correct my spelling 16 times.

Never understood the point of backlit keyboards. You've got to be a total n00b if you actually need to look at the keyboard to type. I've had Macs for years, and never used the feature. It just drains the battery that bit quicker...

I can't type without looking at the laptop sideways lying on the bed.

My arms don't go that way

You do know that sitting in the dark when you use your computer is seriously bad for your eyes, right?

Shouldn't be any problem for your eyes at all.

But if you (op) want backlit keyboard then that's no problem from a variety of PC manufacturers. Are you moaning that we have the choice not to have a backlit keyboard if we want rather than paying for pointless features we don't need?

Marcos, I rant about EVERYTHING, but this one is just worthy of specail attention.

Because, its a laptop, I want battery life, and a comfortable strike action on the keys.

But to say you want a fricken backlight? Of all the pointless things.

If your using your pc in a very low light environment, then your going to hurt your eyes (i know horror stories of this because i spent some time with an optiction, loverly girl she was too) no ifs, no buts.

Secondly, why on earth would i be looking at the keys i'm typing, thats just stupid and likely to cause eye strain (moving from screen to keyboard), its going to make using a PC a much more demanding task, you should simply learn where they all are, its not remotely hard, woman after all can do it.
