    Renting a Room

Ok, so things aren't going well atm with me and Mrs Lucio and it looks like we're heading for a divorce. Now, since all the property is in her name and the fact that she's starting to get violent towrads me, I'm the one who has to try and find somewhere to live. It's been over 10 years since I last rented a place to live, so I'm not quite sure what to look for, how to look for it, or what I need to be careful of.

Any advice people can offer on this would be great because right now I'm thoroughly depressed by the whole thing.

    Re: Renting a Room

    Hi Lucio,

First, I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're having at home and with regards to the domestic abuse you should record anything down and take photos of any visible wounds due to the fact that if any type of investigation takes place then you will have a prolonged amount of evidence. You may also receive some emergency help if it's shown that living with your wife is physically or mentally harming you to the point of moving (which is why your here!).

In terms of renting you have a few options so fear not!

    If you only require a room within a shared house then there are a few sites that have suitable rooms as well as self-contained one bedroom properties or studios. Try these;

www.gumtree.com (which you're probably fully aware of but there are loads of options, more so as private landlords as opposed to estate agents)

    www.housepals.co.uk

    www.easyroommate.com

    www.moveflat.com

    www.findaproperty.com

    www.loot.com

I haven't had properties personally from all of these places but gumtree is usually a good place to start and I've had good experiences through them. If you do want to go to agents then check if they will charge an admin fee upon completion. There are loads of sites if you need anymore then send me an email. I'm currently in the process of moving myself and have 'been round the houses' literally!

Seeing as you're employed you have a good head start as most rooms require this as opposed to those on DSS, albeit an unfair judgement I can understand why people are less inclined to take someone on in that position. Rooms tend to include utility bills as long as they are already in place.

It's handy to take a little notebook and pen to mark down the positive and negative aspects of the place (although people do find it strange when they see that!) but this is because you may have to go through 50 places just to find one you are happy with.

Contracts usually start with a 6 month minimum and tend to extend to 12 months but you can short let if you require it but would need to be enquired about before hand with the landlord or agency.

I'm no estate agent but have moved 4 times in the last 3 years after living in the same property for 18 odd years! So it's just my experience there will be loads of people with more knowledge that should be able to help either on here or C.A.B and http://www.mensadviceline.org.uk

I'm doing this on the quick so if I've missed anything let me know but I hope some of it helps. Chat to friends and family look forward.

    Take care.

    Mazzle

Could knock me down with a feather to read that really sorry to hear it Lucio.

Sounds like you guys have gone beyond the point of marriage counselling &c? No real advice I can offer except the obvious, don't make too hasty a decision on accom, & take something short-term if possible while you get yourself together. Would there be anything you could find through mates/word of mouth, if not just ask plenty of questions about the neighbourhood you're thinking of. Hopefully you won't be far from your own friends etc, it's not a nice time to be moving away from familiarity.
    All the best.

    Re: Renting a Room

Local papers are not a bad bet too. Don't forget that estate agents are evil people

holiday cottages may start getting cheap this time of year if you live in semi rural areas. Don't feel bad about haggling either.

    BTW great post Mazzle.

Unfortunately she's mostly refused to go, twice we've had it organised and twice she's decided to cancel it.

In all honesty, what's happened is I had a mental breakdown end of last year, I've struggled to hang onto my job and yes, things got tough for Mrs Lucio as I went to pieces on her but basically she's refused to really support me, mostly just remaining distant at a time when I really needed someone close.

Things came to a head in the last couple of months when she started taking her anger out on me, suppsoedly to "teach me a lesson" on what it's like to get yelled at (part of my problem was that I was getting irrationally angry), which escalated into her punching, slapping and screaming at me, before threatening me with a knife and then her trying to cut herself. To top it all, she's trying to have me evicted as an "abusive spouse"

I can't really cope with all of this, I'm only just now starting to make a recovery from my breakdown and all the tension in the house is making things tougher.

Sorry to depress everyone with this, I am talking to friends I know in real life but sometimes it helps me get my thoughts together making posts like this, plus a lot of people on these forums have some great advice to share

    Re: Renting a Room

Really sorry to hear this Lucio, I've not lived in rented accommodation since my student days so I can't help there but just wanted to add a note of support as I'm sure everyone else here does too.

Could you stay with a friend or relative for a little while to see if that helps the situation at all?

    Re: Renting a Room

Definately look in local newspapers, and even just adverts in local newsagents windows and you could try sites like www.rightmove.co.uk, or www.spareroom.co.uk, which have rooms and places to rent. Don't sign any long contacts because you don't know how long you will want to stay, especially if you don't like your flatmates.

Although letting agents get a lot of stick, sometimes it can be easier, as you are usually guaranteed a certain level of service and you should be able to avoid dodgy landlords, however, it will be more expensive.

Remember you will have to give 2 months notice on most contracts before you leave unless you want to risk losing your deposit.

Sorry to hear things are not going well, I hope things improve. Having somewhere new to stay will help you make a new and fresh start and I wish you lots of luck with your flat hunting.
