Why do we hate traffic wardens?

Sorry last post for a while...lol

But why do we hate traffic wardens?
Aren't they just doing a job keeping the streets clear of people who can't obey parking instructions?

I just heard a guy in Reigate calling a Traffic Warden and "Effing Kent" for giving him a ticket, he was parked in a loading bay near rush hour. If you know Reigate one way sytem all it takes is one van to double park and it grinds to a halt, that's what the loading bays are there for!

So why do we hate them, is it a toys out the pram attitude to being told we can't do something we already know we shouldn't...

(And I don't mean central London one's or private clampers....)

Thieves probably don't like police officers and detectives all that much.

It's just that more people park badly than nick stuff. Unless your opinion is based on the Daily Mail.

Because, they're no longer traffic wardens but Parking Enforcement Officers.

Re: Why do we hate traffic wardens?

Personaly, I don't really hate the enforces that much, I direct more of my bile and furious anger at the idiots who come up with these restrictions. It seems to me that on my travels round the world that our local council dictatorships are seriously yellow line ( or for some reason in Newcastle 'Meter zone' whatever the hell that is) happy compared to anywhere else, they splash that paint anywhere in order to force you into paying £2 an hour for parking or getting caught for parking on double yellows.

I really wouldn't have a problem with the idea of parking restrictions if they were used correctly, in places where there is a good reason to keep the road clear. But they don't do they, I think you would find it difficult to spot any stretch of road that you can park on in Newcastle and even in the suburbs there are all kinds of parking permit schemes and whatnot.

Personaly I hate the way roads are dealt with in this country, they sick all kinds of useless signs everywhere making the place look a total mess and then they paint the road funny colours and paint in cycle lanes .5 meters wide for a stretch of 10 meters at a time. Any junction you encounter these days has a set of poorly designed traffic lights that will run all night and happily leave you sat at a red light at 3am even though the lights appear to have an IR sensor and there is no traffic to speak of. I like what they do in Holland where after a certain time they just stick all the lights on yellow. I actualy think this makes the wider standards of driving lower because you don't need to think anymore when you get to a roundabout or a junction, you just mindlessly do what the lights tell you to do.

phew, that was quite a rant wasn't it?

Re: Why do we hate traffic wardens?

My first, and so far only parking ticket was given in the time between me parking and going to get a vistors permit. Luckily the Civil Enforcement Officer was still on the same street and I got him to do what he could. A written ticket cannot be canceled on the spot so I had to appeal by post, noting the officer's number and that he had taken photos. It was successful, but the reply was hardly apologetic.

That was Southampton City Council, who are rather stingy about the number of visitors permits each house gets. They're rather fiddly things to set up and only have one use each too.

I don't hate the guy who issued the ticket, he was doing his job and did all he could to help when asked.

Of course they aren't all like that though, as I've been with people who've come back to their car to find an improperly issued ticket - parking at ~6:05pm in a car park with an hour's free parking til 7pm and still getting done, with the ticket time being before 7pm.

Quite a good one though - I agree with much of what you're saying.

For instance, where I live (Bristol) I particularly hate the comedy bus lanes they've been adding in. Clearly the council wanted to show how it was improving public transport by being able to say "30 new bus lanes added to Bristol this year!!!!!one1111", which when you translate it means 30 bus lanes each of which is 10 meters long, and are in the most utterly pointless and stupid places ever.

And I'll try hard not to rant for too long on the new parking-permit scheme. Essentially, Bristol are trying harder and harder to force people to use the buses (which is fair enough), but they still let First Buses run the buses in Bristol, despite them clearly being the most incompetent bunch of transport-logistically-challenged money-grabbing scum the world has ever seen. I could run a better bus service using just my arse.

So... now we are going to have nowhere to park except in a single small area near our flat, assuming we can even get a parking permit because only 3 are allowed PER BUILDING. Oh, and there are 8 people living in my building. How awesome is that. Better still, despite having to pay for the honour of maybe parking on the street outside my flat, apparently the scheme is not even going to generate any revenue to make public transport services better! It'll ONLY PAY FOR ITSELF!! How dumb is that! As far as I can see, this just means that we'll have an army of new traffic wardens invading the entire city, trying to screw us over because we don't want to use the terminally crap bus service.

Now traffic planners that's a different issue.....cycle lanes are built as an afterthought for marking a councils green credentials..

A lack of parking is a problem, too many cars, over development of space, Mums needing tanks to take little Johnny to school.....

Where I live people park on corners thus obstructing everyones field of view, park on pavements forcing mothers with prams and disabled people to go on the road (and blind people to smack into them), double park on narrow roads meaning emergency vehicles couldn't get down...

Generally there are too many cars, too little space and too little common sense to go round....

And this might not be popular but people with disabled badged sticking there car wherever and whenever they need to......

Re: Why do we hate traffic wardens?

Off topic but there is a set of traffic lights at a crossroad in a very affluent area that I pass through on the way to Uni. The lights don't change unless there is someone waiting to cross in the other direction, which is very handy, especially later in the evening when there is considerably less traffic about.

As for traffic warden popularity, it can't help that people think traffic wardens get paid commission or a target bonus. I'm not sure if they actually do but if that is the case, it is harder to justify the public service/civic duty angle.

I think the official answer is they don't get paid on their performance but bad employers may allow target chasing to go on unofficially...
