    Can you get surround sound from a .avi film?

    I backed up several of my non-copyrighted DVDs before uni, and since then my parents relocated abroad so have put them all into storage, which i have no access to. I backed them up as i move every year at uni (4 times in total) and my parents have moved twice since then, as a result it makes it easier keeping track of stuff on my HDD.

    I recently bought a lovely 5.1 surround system & want to get the most from it. The DVDs have all been ripped in a .avi or .mkv (for the few blu ray DVDs i own), but i don't know if they are encoded with surround sound(?), or how the process of checking would take place. They will all be played back on my computer (are there any programs to use that will sort surround sound out for me?), through my Sony DG820 receiver.

    Can anyone she any light on this matter? I am sorry for being so vague but i know so little about this area.

    edit; for the record, the title should rear 'DVDs', not 'Films', if a mod can change it, thanks.

    Re: Can you get surround sound from a .avi film?

    AVI and MKV are just containers. They only define how the audio/video streams are stored and what they can be, but the actual choice of streams depends on the settings when ripped.

    Both support codecs that do 5.1 sound, so if you ripped a 5.1 audio stream into them, it should be possible to play back with the appropriate player.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: Can you get surround sound from a .avi film?

    He obviously doesn't know if AC3 was included when encoded (n00b! )

    When you play the file you should be able to see info about the audio stream, if you have a decent media player. Otherwise there are many avi info programs on the net that will tell you explicitly the number of channels used by the audio stream (eg)

    Looks like the forum mods/admins are getting a lot more lenient on this subject. A couple of years ago this thread would have been closed or deleted (like one of mine).

    What on the subject on how to get surround sound working in a computer setup? Or which formats support surround sound?

    He has asked a legitimate technical question, whatever he applies the answers to is none of my or your concern.

    Re: Can you get surround sound from a .avi film?

    I know it can be a hot subject but just to reiterate these are my discs, that i have copied due to the fact that i move yearly (4 times in total, not including parents moving twice) whilst i am at uni and it just makes life easier going to start -> videos then selecting the DVD rather then hunt through boxes for DVDs, their cases and then finding them scratched.

    Can anyone recommend a program that will play them back with 5.1 sound, if they had been encoded with that in the first place (i had no idea at the time so didnt bother to encode with/without it). Ideally id like to stick with VLC, so is their an addon or a plugin that could be used?

    thanks guys

    As did Funkstar when he posted this thread.

    I believe it's still illegal to backup your own DVDs

    Its also illegal to start wars through lieing to the population, claiming expenses on mortgages that don't exist, claiming duck houses & porn as legitimate expenses and letting [convicted] terrorists go in order to improve diplomatic relations....but the government seem to be able to overlook those ones,so i like to think they'll give me a bit of leniency towards me & my backups.

    It's not the govenrment that close threads around here

    I was just commenting that despite the often stated position of Hexus on these matters, more and more similar thread are running their course. I'm not debating the rights and wrongs of the subject again, just making an observation that this thread is still here when others have been removed pretty sharpish.

    I would propose stop arguing about the rights/wrongs and discuss the issue before the chop!

    (Not a moan at you Funk, just an observation)

    I use K-lite codec pack which includes nearly every audio and video codec you could want, nevermind need.
    Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
    CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
    TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
    for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
