    I need a soldering guru!

    My skills are lacking.

I'm trying to make a connection between my iphone headset jack and the front aux in on my car.

I've sucessfully made up the 3.5mm 3 pole "car end" jack however the phone end uses a 4 pole 3.5mm jack and its just too fiddly.

Has anyone successfully wired up a 4 pole jack?

A steady hand and a very fine bit on the soldering iron. Obviously solder the least accessible connection first. A magnifying glass (held in a vice) can be useful too - and good light.

Re: I need a soldering guru!

What iron and bits do you have? It can make a huge difference to jobs like this. If you solder often a variable temperate iron is well worth the investment.
Also, what type of wire are you trying to solder onto the bits?

I suspect Madduk is right though, something like this with a 3.5 Male to 3.5 Male would work, and be less prone to breaking.

I've got a variable iron, bits etc. here, so I can give it a try for you sometime, although very unlikely to be this week I'm afraid as I'm super busy

Re: I need a soldering guru!

Loads on Ebay too, although I've just come across this, which says:

3.5mm Gold Connector Stereo Audio Cable Male Jack to Male Jack 1 Meter

Enables two audio devices, players and equipment to be connected together. Say your iPod to the Line input or Aux in on a car stereo.

For example, you could take the audio out from an MP3 player or iPod and connect this to an audio in on your computers soundcard or audio line input on a laptop, using this cable!

OR you want to connect your mp3 player, iPod or minidisc player to your audio equipment or in car connection?
    Same as with this item.

According to that then a 3.5<->3.5 connection should work with the Iphone for this?

edit - ah ok, you want the mic working too. Do you have a mic built into your car, or are you using an external one? why bother with a switch?

Re: I need a soldering guru!

Yes, any 3.5mm jack with work for the audio, however I want to plumb in an external microphone as well for which I need to wire up a 4 pole jack.

I have tried those adaptors on ebay, taken them apart and found the wires to be either ultra thin or some weird material that I can't solder.

Hence my decision to make something a bit sturdier.

    edit.

The switch enables skipping tracks and pausing - useful since the headunit would not be controlling the audio playback, doubly useful if I am using co-pilot on the iphone at the same time

From what i can see from your diagram that shouldn't be too hard to solder up. Yes the connector may look small (to you) but it reality its not. If your still having problems post some pics of the actual connectors and i'll see if i can help.
