    Cheque fraud!

    Hi all,
I've had a new cheque book I ordered not arrived and today I found out that one of the cheques from it has been used to take £890 out of my account. Originally I ordered it on the 10th, and I hadn't recieved it by the 19th so I rang up the bank to ask about it. They told me to wait for a few days because of postal strikes, and today I went on Internet banking and found out that the cheque used showed up in the statement today.

I've gone into the bank, and cancelled the stolen cheque book and ordered another sent out for me to collect in the branch. I got put through to the phone to report it, and they have a name on the cheque that I don't recognise. Does this mean they know who the fraudster is? Is there anything else I can do about it?

Sods law, have a job interview tomorow and this happens. Lucky a family member has agreed to lend me money for travelling to it while I get my fraud claim investigated. 2 days for an investigation? I just don't understand how the cheque got accepted without needing the correct signature. No wonder the banks are in trouble!

Someone managed to extract money from a savings account with only my name and a fake signature, this was when I was at school and I didn't even know how to get money out Got the money back no problem, hopefully you'll have the same outcome. Good luck!

    Re: Cheque fraud!

Watchdog wrote a load of cheques out with dodgy signatures, including Mickey Mouse and they were accepted by the banks

It's a joke... I hate still having to have a chequebook as all they need is one of them and they can practically bleed you dry

Perhaps the person has a sample of your signature and did a fairly decent likeness of it?

I know my handwriting is terrible, I cannot sign my name the same twice.....yet never had a cheque queried in 20 years. They do not expect them to be carbon copies.

Makes me think the perp either knows you or has been rummaging around in your bins....

What about rent cheques for landlords?

Nope, never signed anything since I've lived at my current address. Only just moved back from uni which was 1 month ago.

I was thinking about that. In a thread about Royal Mail a few days ago, I mentioned that I was waiting for a few things and this was one of them. Mine is notorious for putting things through the wrong boxes too, but my dad reckons it could be someone at the actual office who did it.

I've ordered a credit report from experdian using their 30 day trial but I havn't received a pin that was to show up around the same time. Time to cancel it? I think so. My guess is that my postman/office definately is/has a fraudster around.

Nope cheques still have their uses, we ask people to pay invoices for private stuff by cheque as we have no cash facility. If I do a job privately that is expensive I often get paid by cheque, deposites/rent is still often paid by cheque. My Dad gets lots of cheques (accountant) as payment.

This is namely because it is the easiest form of payment for many people, especially small businesses/sole traders.

    Re: Cheque fraud!

Yup, we almost always pay tradesmen/builders by cheque since it's the easiest way to give the chap his lolly if it's not a small job. Otherwise it's usually cash.

    Re: Cheque fraud!

Cheques are supposedly being phased out entirely by 2018. The cheque guarantee cards are going a lot sooner though, they're going in 2011.
