A reminder. Fuel duty increases at midnight.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8230185.stm

As if we haven't been robbed enough this year, the government is going to be upping the cost of fuel by 2p a litre. This will be the third increase in 9 months. Way to go Mr Brown. Robbing bastard.

Good job I fuelled up at 'only' 101.9p on Saturday I hate to think how much premium is going to cost when I get the 924 back on the road!

Fuel duty is one of the fairest taxes out there - pay what you use. Much better than blunt taxes like RFL that cost everyone regardless of how much they use their car.

You really think its a fair tax? 3rd increase in 9 months, then another increase when VAT goes back to 17.5%. That's fair then? This just doesn't impact me, this impacts everyone, we rely on the roads to transport our goods, these increases have to be passed on. So the general cost of food and other goods will increase as well.

Really think this is a fair tax?

Yes, absolutely. It means there's a great incentive to lower food/goods miles, reduce our own car usage, car share, use more efficient cars, drive more efficiently. Or not, and pay more - but at least we have the choice.

The amount of tax a government has to collect is more or less static - they'll have to get it from somewhere, and if it's not via a pay as you use tax then it's via something where everyone has to pay, regardless of usage. Take RFL for example - why should I pay the same amount if I don't use the roads very much compared to someone who does five times my milage and thus causes more damage to the infrastructure etc?

its not really all that fair, I have a job that means I have to drive over 50miles a day on crappy roads in traffic jams etc and what do I get from the government for all that effort? More tax on my fuel bill!

Your job should compensate you for that, not the government. Unless you work for the govt. in which case they are

well I could just sit on the dole and not provide a service. I am feeling like a slave to the government, they sit at the top looking down on us all, looking into our bank records, watching what we say, who we talk to, telling us what we can watch, what we should pay for etc etc.

    Its a joke.

Flat rate taxes may seem fairer, however the amount it affects people is not equal, poorer people are disproportionally affected, as the cost forms a bigger part of their over all income. Also poorer people cannot afford newer more efficient cars that more wealthy people use to mitigate the cost increases. In our modern society is very difficult to avoid, most households need two earners to break even, while one can often live close enough for public transport the second normally cannot.

Sorry, but I don't agree - efficient cars don't cost any more than non-efficient cars. My first car cost $750 but still managed 40-45mpg (petrol). I sold it for $750. My current one is the 67mpg Astra that's nine years old - again there are loads out there without costing much.

But if you do want to make it fairer for these people then address RFL - why should you have to pay more for an older car? If it's on the grounds of efficiency and CO2 then fuel tax is a far fairer way of doing it.

    Ahem.

    Buy a bicycle.

I started cycling to work and I barely have to fill up my car more than once in every two months.
