Strange Missed Heart Beats
For a while now I have had a strange issue, my heart seems to miss a beat and then beat really fast for 5 or so beats. This used to happen maybe once a day but seems to have reducted to once a week, it feels very uncomfortable and after my chest seems to hurt a little (but maybe this is in my head?) I have had a few scans at the doctors / hospital but they find nothing, I have been on a tredmill in hospital while they watch my heart and once again they find nothing but how can a few 5 to 10 minute scans be even nearly enough to say that everything is ok and if everything is ok why do they still happen?
I know people always say "Go to your GP" etc but I already have (with no luck) although they are totaly useless round here, they told me I had a spained ankle when I had actually broken my leg and told me I had a water infection when I really had kidny stones.
Do you think its worth going private to get them to look into this?
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
I think this does happen to a lot of people, I'm not sure of the cause, or if it is anything to be worried about, how long has it been going on for?
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
for a while now, don't know exactly
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
i think this often gets put down to a panic attack, even though your not panicing at the time..
i get it quite often and have woke up in the night when its about to happen and been convinced im about to have a heart attack !
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
I had this for ages... it was at a time when I was swimming a lot and my fitness was increasing.
My doctor was totaly unphased by it. He said that hearts have a rythm, and that they can and do change their frequency throughout your life, and particularly if your fitness levels are changing.
It's the STRENGTH of the beat, not the frequency you gotta be proud of :) unless you're a fighterpilot.. in which case you'll not be allowed to fly.
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
It maybe that other people have been told its cool but I think its important to point out that you kinda rely on your heart and that you should probably seek a medical professionals opinion. Its just not worth risking it mate

yes, I already have done.
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
INAD, but from what I remember about this it's perfectly normal for hearts to beat erratically, especially if you're younger.
But if you're not happy with your GP then change to a different one. In the mean time just cut down on caffeine and other stimulants to see if it has any effect.
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
When it misses a beat, does your neck click?
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
Does it feel like it's fluttering?
I had similar symptoms, it would flutter or if i lay on one side in bed it was very uncomfortable & I had to move, went to the docs/hospital, got a chest xray, had a little box thing I carried around with me for 2 days which i pressed when I felt it happen (sods law it didn't while I wore the box!)
They found nothing...useless! Still get it sometimes but I've had it for many years & it goes away for ages then comes back. Sometimes it 'quivers' so much I have to just sit down and wait for it to go, horrible feeling but not painful.

Good ol' Internet medicine, if in doubt, link Wikipedia :)
Ahem, from what I remember of my bio-science course, basically they're nothing strange until they become either frequent or can be attached to a known cause (e.g. whenever you excerise).

no, but I do hear a glugging sound at times
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
I've had a similar thing (I've been checked-out for heart murmurs and all sorts.) They said my heart was more efficient than average and was very noisy and mine doesn't beat regularly at all.. If I've been running/exercising late in the evening then I'm always very aware of it booming away in my eardrums.
As mentioned above, do you drink a lot of caffeine or have other stimulants? They can play merry havoc with your heart rythm. Even a Chinese meal can set me off (M.S.G. I think..)
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
no caffeine, no stimulants, no sugary drinks eg Coke. 2L of water a day etc
I don't smoke or Drink
Re: Strange Missed Heart Beats
It could be that it's just your natural heart rhythm; it could be surges of adrenaline if you're still getting panicky flutters or it could be a byproduct of your recent upsurge in training too..
TBH, unless they make you feel very ill I would ignore them.. if they're worrying you (and that can exacerbate these things too) then for your peace of mind get a second opinion, privately if necessary. I'd be willing to bet it's nothing to worry about though. :)
