I mean, I'm sure the experience is useful, and I don't know much about the journalism industry, but this sounds a little unprofessional to me.

Plenty of people out of work in the current climate or looking for work, i would see this as the ideal stepping stone, it could lead to employment in more than one way, or a good reference with a well known website.

OK, work experience for a student, rather than paying for a job... Makes a big difference. The latter is a total no-no in my industry, and can severely damage future career prospects.
