September the 11th, a few years on.

And, don't hate me too much for this, but I hope to god that people will look back on this in perspective.

Compare the aftermath of that, with the economic mess the US drove itself into over the last 18 months.

Whilst it might be nice and easy to have a tanagble enemy, espesually if they have a different religion and skin colour. Who did more damage?

Them or the millions of consumers who lived far beyound their means?

As much as I hate the financial institutions for what they did, they didn't kill almost 3000 people.......

I have a feeling a few people would give all the money in the world to have lost ones back. I don't see how the murder of 3000 people has anything to do with the economic downturn really.

Because when you look at how that shaped foreign poletics its far more than 3,000 now.

Also lets keep some persective here, 3,000 is nothing. How many people die on the roads and we don't begin to start murdering people as a result.

So lets say airport checkins take 30 minuites longer as a result of 9/11, apparently there are roughly 30,000 flights per day, average number of passengers is 60-80 so lets say 70.

Assume the average life span is say 665,760. But lets remove some for sleep which 'has' to happen with current medical science, so call it 500,000 hours.

So each year with the added delays (30,000 * 365) / 2 = 5,475,000 or perhaps one could say 77 people per year die as a result of the delays in the US alone.

Now that assumes that they where at their full age in 9/11, they of course werent, many people where only robbed of a few decades of life.

We should never get all Gardian reader on deaths, we should look at them in perspective.

As such you can look at an economic downturn 'cost' the same way you can the 'cost' of a terror attack.

9/11 had a lot more impact than just causing 30mins delay. Think of afghanistan and iraq. 9/11 had a huge impact on politics. Without george bush in for a second term things might've been different and without 9/11 to pray on he might not have got it.

To compare the recession and 9/11 is slightly niave in my opinion.

Re: September the 11th, a few years on.

I would like to see how the family's of these people would take your comments. loss of life is bad, the loss from delays, the loss to war, terrorism, falling down the stairs its all bad.

If you had died in 9/11 how would you family feel to find out some one was saying "well its not as bad as XYZ?"

I think you are right that the war was nothing to do with 9/11 and probably 9/11 was used as an excuse to go to war but to say the recession is worse is a very tactless comment.

ok, so because people have suffered, we're not allowed to have objective conversation.

dear god, imagine if the health system was run in such a fashion.

Regardless of the reason for the war without 9/11 it most likely would not have happened.

I think maybe what you're saying is that the recession will impact more people and therefore is worse not that 9/11 does not really matter.

Its just its a very sensitive issue so people will take offense to comments a lot more.

Re: September the 11th, a few years on.

Ultimately, you're looking at two completely different events in recent history, ones without easily quantifiable consequences. Sure, the immediate effects can be judged, but how much is one human life worth in currency? Does it matter who exactly died?

You could even start pondering whether the economic downturn was triggered by 9/11, the loss of so many financial staff who might have had some oversight or experience to have staved off some of the worst mistakes?

Re: September the 11th, a few years on.

It's impossible to tell which has had more on an impact yet. Ask me in 10 years when everyone knows if this was indeed a V, U or W shaped recession
Should things continue bouncing back at the rate they are now, 9/11 undoutably had more of an effect. A recession and 2 wars followed it.

Yes, there have been disasters people do not mention much....mostly NATURAL disasters.

People still talk about the holocaust, people still talk about columbine, people still talk about 9/11

I just find it cold and selfish to think for a moment that your finances are of more importance then innocent peoples lives.
