    Recommend me a fridge-freezer

Seeing as its white goods recommendation time, I could use some help picking a new fridge freeze. I currently have a flat back hotpoint mistral one. When i got it I loved the idea of the flat back design as our cats, kept climbing behind the old one! However this thing as been a disaster, I have replaced the themocouples in it many times which has extended its life however the last time I did it made little difference, and it is time for the thing to go. I think the problem lies with the defrost/frost free, it that it ice is building up after while it just turns off and i have to turn the whole things off and on to bring it back to life (how the temp reading can then change 10-20 Kelvin I have no idea!) Why can't I get one that does not auto defrost/frost free that was always an easy job to do and they lasted 10+ years seempluz! This thing has a pipe from the freeze to the fridge section and a fan to give it air, which is a nightmare of complexity, the fan assist means the top of the freezer is the coldest unless it goes off then it gets warmest, giving it a really bad range of temperatures, and in fact causes lots of ice build up on the food.

At the moment lots of Hotpoint seem to show up seeing we already have one are the new ones any better? I would prefer another brand really.

    So some guide lines
Maximum of £500 price, prefer £300
    Silver/Gray/Aluminium Colour
At least 4 shelves in freezer section.
    5+ years of life.
Own cooling element in fridge section, not ducted
    Simple.
    NO FANs.

Have a look here (loads of user reviews):

Chose my fridge by looking on this website and it's been great so far...

Rather interesting, I had not really considered an "american" style fridge, but that looks rather good, have too see if something like that will fit in the gap. Thanks for the review site too, better than the ones I found.

    Re: Recommend me a fridge-freezer

My mum got a Samsung fridge-freezer installed fairly recently, and it has this comical problem (as far as I understand it) whereby it draws humid air out of the fridge, which is then blown by a fan to ensure that it keeps evaporating into the air and prevents any ice forming. Which is a lovely idea, except the humid air runs past the cooling element, where it condenses, forming a pool of water in the space where the fan goes. This of course then freezes, eventually reaching the level of the fan, at which point it turns into an automatic ice-pick, generating the most wonderful juddering sound which reverberates around the entire house.

They extended the warranty on it as a result, and have thankfully fixed it after three attempts (at least for the moment), but it just goes to show that customer reviews are extremely important. Ciao is always worth checking out as well.

That is exactly the same as you said on the washing machine thread care to back that up with any experience or model numbers? Beko seem to be the cheapest brand on the market, i don't mind cheap if it is good, but are they actually any good?

    NO FANs.

you might not be able to see the cooling element in the fridnge/upper section but it'll still have vents..

and fans are essential tbh. Why, may I ask, don't you want them?

    Re: Recommend me a fridge-freezer

I'll expand on the basis of my new Bosch fridge freezer.

When the door is opened, the fan, if it was on, goes off. This stops the cold air being blown out of the door.

As soon as I shutt he door, I hear the fan start up...this helps to bring the fridge down to temperature much faster than if it had no fan.

My only issue when buyinga massive fridge freezer was that no one did one with a both MAASSIVE fridge AND huge freezer. I opted for Bosch because it had the best blend of deep freezer drawers AND massive fridge with NO handle on the front, so it opens without fouling the wall.

It's also immensely cheaper to run than my old fridge freezers were.

Well this is not true for my fridge freezer there is no cooling element in the top its just ducted. Going back to the design of my current fridge freezer, the cooler is in the freezer and it has ducting which a fan blows in it to move air from the freezer to the fridge and has a baffle in the fridge to stop the air when it is cool enough. Sadly ice can block the ducting from the freezer to the fridge. If there was a cooling element in the fridge and freezer there would not be much need for a fan. One less moving part.

It was a prefect wish list, I will comprise later... The less/smallest comprise the better.

You can pick up some good bargains. I bought an american style magtag for over £600 less than the store price at Comet and £400 cheaper than anywhere else on the web.

    OK, now we're getting there

Look for a Bosch which has Frost Free FRIDGE. This sounds weird, as there should not be Frost in a Fridge, but there IS in the case you explain.

Classix is the cheapest (I have one of those) and it doesn't have Frost Free top half, it has Auto Defrost which is what stopped my vents freezing up I guess

Exxcel is mid range with extra shelf systems that dangle for bottle etc, weird shaped doors pockets, and handles on the outside...none of which I wanted !

And Logixx is top line with ice cube dispensers and other such extra gubbin's

    http://www.bosch-home.co.uk/our-prod...sixx/list.html

model ranges listed on left.. then click on the model to see the spec.

And yes.. I love Bosch and so good has the fridge freezer been, so well made and so much cheaper to run than I'd dreamed of, I got a Bosch Oven and that's as good.. possibly better.
