    Facial Hair

I have an intreview tomorrow for the position of analyst programmer. I fully intent to go dressed smartly, shirt tie and trousers etc. The question is do I have a full shave or would it be ok to just trim my beard and make sure it is even and tidy? (my beard is usually a number 3 all over, but isn't trimmed to any particular style or shape) I'm not sure if having a beard is seen as being scruffy and whether it would give a bad first impression or not.

    Thanks

    Andy

As long as it is tidy it shouldn't have any bearing on your success and if you normally like to wear one then I'd stick with it.

    Re: Facial Hair

For interviews and 'special occasions' I'll usually always have a proper close wet shave. At all other times I run the hair clippers over my face once a week, if that.

Unshaven is perfectly fine for the modern office, but for first impressions you should always project an image of someone that knows how to look after themself.

I don't think beards should be a problem, but some people may have an issue with stubble for an interview.

Having a beard myself, potential employees having one has never put me off if, as you say, it is neat and tidy.

Go as normal and if you don't get the job, sue them for being beardist!
    (From another facial hair sporter.)

More seriously, so long as you look tidy I'd have thought you'd be fine.

    Re: Facial Hair

If there is going to be no tan line go for the shave.

If you don't shave regular then don't do it last minute as you might cut yourself to ribbons! I found out recently due to low skin temp and being in a hurry.

Its probably more important to ask them "How do you do?" rather than a poorly placed "arright"! Good handshake too.

    Re: Facial Hair

Your interviewer(s) will expect you to be respectful; it is, after all, his/their opinion that matters most in these circumstances. You are conveying that respect by turning up smartly, and in my view appropriately, dressed. A beard trim will be fine; you're expected to be enthusiastic and, to a degree, compliant, but not devoid of character. Besides, a beard for the post you're after is almost a pre-requisite isn't it ? Good luck Andy.

    Re: Facial Hair

I went for a job interview recently and the interview said to me, plus points for turning up very smartly dressed (more smartly dressed than most that went for the job).

But then he asked why i didn't shave, uh i shaved before i came, i.e. dry shave with my stubble trimmer, he really seemed to take offence to it, and told me even though i'm on a phone all day and customers will rarely see me, that i would need to be clean shaven at all times.

I'll be honest, i was a bit confused by this, i should be judged on my c.v and character, not whether i have stubble or not.

The job i did get, which was a much better job in an upper class office, the owners did not mind. I think what it boils down to is how old fashioned the interviewer is.

    Re: Facial Hair

    stubble != beard

I can see why people would take issue with stubble as that can look like you haven't bothered to shave.

I have a beard at the moment, mainly because I hate shaving, especially certain areas round my chin, so it works for me. I've had it for a good few months now and generally keep it tidy. I also shave my cheeks and neck with a wet razor so you can tell it is looked after and not just left to do its own thing.

Also had compliments about me beard recently. Was rather nice

    Re: Facial Hair

So long as you don't look like a tramp you'll be fine. I always have a proper shave for interviews and so on, I like to look clean and tidy or as the job description says "well presented"

That said I only shave every other day for work at the moment, and not all this week as I'm on holiday, give it another day and I'll look like a cave man.
