Why do you want to become a police officer? [max 200 words]

The fundemental reason for wanting to become a police officer is born out of a desire to do someting constructive with my life and to serve the local community. I want a job that will present me daily with new challanges and allow me to develop my exisiting skills. I also want to be able to look back on my life and to feel that i havent wasted the skills that i have; and that during the course of my career i have been able to at least make one persons life better

How long have you been seriously thinking about becoming a police officer and what first got you interested? [max 150 words]

I have been interested in persuing a career since secondary school; this was as a result of an officer coming to the school to give a career talk about how life in the police force was and what the job entailed. I did look into applying when i left secondary school but at the time i didnt feel i was ready and as a result i carried on in further education. i applied for the police force in 1999 after completing by university degree; but unfortunatelty was unsuccesful but the desire has still stayed.

What are your expectations of police work? [max 200 words]

I expect a large part of the job to entail responding to emergency calls and the paperwork that it entails. I am very much looking forward to the interaction with coleuges and the general public.
I dont feel that the job will have a huge effect on my social life as many of the activities that i currently enjoy doing will not be affected; i currently work nights as a doorman so am already used to working unusual hours and late shifts. In reference to my domestic life i have a partner who is very supportive in my decision to apply for the police force, so again although the shift patterns may cause problems i dont feel that they will effect my domestic life negatively. But accept that due to the shifts my lifestyle and the routine that i am used to now will change.
My decision to join the police force in many respects is dominated for my desire to forge a long term career for myself; which allows me to grow as a person and to constantly meet new challanges and learn new skills. My goals are to progress to the rank of seargent or to specialise in one of the many areas that the job would offer

What have you done to prepare for this application? [max 200 words]

I have several friends who have joned the lancashire constabulary, so i have been lucky enough to have spoken to them about the job and what it entails.
i have also obtained and read the book entitled 'How to Pass the Police Initial Recruitment Test', which i found very useful. in addition i have read through the 'police could you' website and looked at the web sites of the forces i wish to join.
In addition i have started jogging 3-4 times a week to increase my fitness to the relevent level required.
Also i am trying to organise to spend part of a shift with a police officer; so as to give me a better understanding of the job

this is the first of 3 pages.

Ok then mate, any specific questions you want answering at all???

What I do know is that in the structured interview, they like to put pressure on you when there is no obvious way out of a situation. you can explain yourself all day long why you reacted in the way you did and they will keep on making explain yourself why you responded in the way you did, if you get what I mean??

I am also in the process of applying but be warned it can take a long time. It's been more than a month since I sent my application, and I've heard nothing. Be very wary about which force you plan on applying to. The Met aren't accepting applications, and the MoD are only accepting transfers. West Midlands is a good bet at the moment. I have spoken to several serving officers and they all say 'The Job's gone to hell, but the pension is good'!

i feel ive got the patience and many of the skills that are needed to be a police man, as i ve worked as a doorman no for the last 5 years. and if your doing the job properly i.e not being a thug then you develop a lot of interpersonal skills and im very adapt at dealing with volatile and confrontational situations.

and skeps yep i know what you mean they bascially want you to not change your mind and bow to peer pressure. that shouldnt be too hard as im a stubborn sod when i want to be.

I don't mind trying to help out a bit. I've been in for quite a while mate and been specialised for a long time, not had to wear a big hat since about '86. The jobs what you make it basically. Then again I only joined for the crime side, people breaking into houses, mugging old ladies and that sort of thing. To be perfectly frank didn't join to do folk for having a light out or for having a joint now and then. Too many people join too young and see it all as black and white when at the end of the day its all varying shades of grey half the time. I personally think that so far you're on the right lines and you're already aware that tact and diplomacy is a damn sight better approach to problems than the use of brute force. The problem with the application is one thing but there's an assessment type of interview after that. Good luck anyway and if there's any questions you want to ask just pm me. I woulkd keep on checking into the pension situation though. Not totally up to date but the financial goalposts seem to keep changing, although if you're an old git like me not much can change.
    cheers

yep not a problem - had a crack with a pal in training and it's mostly common sense, community spirit that sort of thing at this stage. They thought you had a good start with your experience on the doors showing the importance of real life experience and coping with those sort of problems.
