    <Speechless>

This is possibly the best sign yet that we need a fundamental change in our government.

I am now prepared to vote for any party that will reduce the Stasi-quotient of the UK. This will obviously rule out Labour, The Nazi's and I think the Communists have folded already ?

I thought it was an NHS advisor who was coming out with this, not government.

    Re: <Speechless>

It is. But I believe that the NHS represents the Govt. as does the BBC. This sort of blatant demand for greater intrusion to make govt cheaper is revolting, and the fact that they feel OK in making the claim to the Govt, published by the Govt. makes me very nervous.

Sure. Depends on your definition of Govt.
It's a bit off-topic though. How do you feel about cliams like that being made anywhere outside a Nazi rally ?

All this shows to me is that we *really* need some more statisticans in power. One of the first things I was taught in my statistics A-level module was that it's actually really hard to draw conclusions from statistics, so "facts" like you're 76% more likely to die in one postcode area than another does not necessarily mean you can draw the conclusion that medical care in that area is worse.

You were the one talking about a change of party, but if you're talking about non-party 'government' then it wouldn't make any difference.

Worrying, on the face of it. But I'd like to know more about the context.

    Re: <Speechless>

I'm sorry but I can't imagine a context where that suggestion is anything other than an extremist view to be fought against.
Why not complusory calisthenics in front of the Telescreen each morning ? That would probably have measurable benefits...

Unfortunately a change of party will likely make no difference as you say. A failure of the democratic system.

    Re: <Speechless>

    Yes and No.

Certain parties, particular those which have a considerably left of centre leaning always prefer the state to have more power.

There is an obvious upside to this, people are inherently selfish, racist/xenophobic, sexist, agest etc. By having a state impose rules on your daily life, they can seek to mitigate this, they can put in rules to protect minorities, help design community cohesion etc.

This is often what is lacked by the Conservative point of view, where you in effect give trust to the people and have a small government that doesn't interfere. The downside thou of non-interference could soon well be seen in say Iran vrs Israel thou.....

Its about striking the fine balance between the two, the downside is its always been in recent history those who where left wing who have done the worst crimes, and limited democracy. It seams that when the state gets too powerful, you often end up with worse predudice than people who are left to their own devices (how many anti-semites would have been able to kill even 1 jewish person if there was no nazi party?)......

This is why, I am so strongly in favour of the small government, it might not be a perfect solution, there might be a lot of in-equality, but if there is, it is purely the fault of EACH and EVERY individual.

    Re: <Speechless>

IMHO there's no difference between autocracies, Left or Right. They seek to control the population and to perpetuate themselves. I would have described those views as more Libertarian, which laso have problems in the extreme, but more generally coincide with mine.

My worry is that I can see some alarming symptoms in the UK, and have no confidence in the current democratic system/parties to do anything about it at all. Accordingly the pretence that my vote is a say in the running of the country is a fiction.

Agreed. There's a marked similarity with a magician saying "pick a card, any card "
