Favourite song of the year 2009

Favourite song of the year 2009. A few ground rules:

    * Must have been released this year
    * Can be any song - singles or album tracks
    * You must post a link so we can hear it
    * State it's genre to the best of your ability
    * Optional 2 or 3 lines of comments if you feel inclined

    I'll start us off...

Röyksopp - Vision One (Electronic / Melodic / Layered)

    Comments:
3rd track from their latest album "Junior". The lyrics relate the story of our evolution into machines, mentally if not physically and the decay of society into something joyless, reminiscing of the things we slowly lost along the way. The song itself evolves into more distortion and "machine-like" beeping as it progresses which reflect the lyrics. Perfect Röyksopp!

Out of interest, what if you can't link to the song? Chances are that the songs I am thinking of are going to be hard to come by on the net to link to.

Well in that case, we'll have to do without a link This is a thinly disguised attempt to get recommendations for some new tunes afterall

Re: Favourite song of the year 2009

Good choice of thread, though I think you'll probably hate me for my suggestion!

    I vote for:

La Roux - In For The Kill (Electonica / Pop / Quirky!)

    Comments
This was the first "official" single from the self titled album by La Roux (the "unofficial" first being Quicksand in 2008). The song is obviously aimed at people who are going through emotional turmoil with a loved one, but for me the reason I chose this number was because of the whole "sound" that has helped to revitalise my interest in 80's music.

I was brought up in the late 80's (1986 I popped out!) and so, in a way, the music I was introduced to almost subconsciously were bands like Duran Duran, A Ha, Depeche Mode, Queen, The Human League (and others too numerous [and embarrassing] to mention!).

I really seemed to glide through the 90's as I didn't like the whole Indie / Britpop scene and ended up finding a temporary home with dance / electronica music. I guess in a way this type of music has always been with me!
When the single was released early in the year I didn't like it at first but it seemed to burrow under my skin and stay there, jumping out only when I was least expecting it!

I'm not normally fond of "pop" songs but I found this one seemed to connect and perhaps even on some level "resonate" with an earlier "me" (right, that's it, back away slowly and phone for the men in white scrubs to take him away!). I can't say I'm too fond of the rest of the album but this song just seems to grab me and force me back into my youth before the "real world" jumped out and dragged me kicking and screaming into "adulthood".

More than 3 lines cptwhite_uk, apologies for that but I needed to get that off my chest!

    Cheers,
    Harv

One? Damn that's difficult...in fact it's so ridiculously difficult I'm just going to post the first awesome song from this year that comes to mind.

    Steel Panther - Asian Hooker

No link because the phrase "not safe for work" doesn't even do it justice, you'll have to search for it on your own....

Re: Favourite song of the year 2009

Been some really good suggestions so far, cptwhite that is an amazing song and listening to some of their other stuff now makes me wanna get their album. Really big thumbs up for introducing them.

I can't possibly think of all the things I've listened to this year but one artist has really stood out that I didn't think I'd enjoy and that's Jay-Z and his new album Blueprint 3.

    The song? Young Forever:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrLJ4qYTinI (Rap)

This song grew on me big time, and I mean big time. It has a dreamy atmosphere that fits the theme of the lyrics perfectly. The bittersweet lyrics plays with the idea of immortality but it is bittersweet because you know it's only a dream. The sampled melody seems to drift peacefully between the beats which I think are perfect. At first I despised it for 'destroying' a classic which I'm sure most people will probably feel but for some reason the more I listened to it the more I feel Jay-Z has expanded the song and achieved something absolutely spectacular. It may not have the best lyrics or tune for a song (I still maintain Jimmy Eat World's Futures album as the best lyrics on an album I have ever heard) the lyrics and melody of this song creates one of the best harmonies of moods and emotions I have heard this year.

Best quote: "So let's just stay in the moment, smoke some weed, drink some wine
Reminisce, talk some ****, forever young is in your mind..."

edit: ok cptwhite this isn't even funny anymore, I can imagine Royksopp being one of my favourite bands even at this early stage. Their music is like a softer Styrofoam and done much better! Wow I am soo impressed right now.

Not had a particularly inspiring year musically, but I'm going to with Simian Mobile Disco's "Audacity of Huge"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylu0ybj7DIg

Dancy electro would be the genre I guess.
