Aaaaaand it's all over...
There's no end of journalists that are making themselves and their publications look like complete tools.
As a quick example: The Guardian - Barbara Ellen
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...gainst-machine
She also happily neglects to mention the fact that the campaign has raised over £50,000 for Shelter, which in itself is a great thing.
McElderry makes himself look like a tool: http://www.nme.com/news/rage-against-the-machine/48964 "McElderry has defended Cowell and said his own track deserves to be Christmas Number One."
"I will be really disappointed if it doesn't go to No1 after all the effort I've put in to this and winning the show."
Riiiiiiight.... So you deserve to win because you won an extremely crap TV show?
Now i didn't have anything against him until that, but that has really got my goat! (presuming that it is accurate ofcourse...)
If RATM come out on top then Shelter gets even more donations and the UK gets a free gig http://www.nme.com/news/rage-against-the-machine/48961
If McElderry wins we still get spoon fed the monotonous auto tune drivel which has been plaguing us for quite a few years.
Either way, over £50k to charity cannot be sniffed at, so anyone that brands the campaign as stupid and a waste of time... well...
I think the better comment was
So it's really difficult to:"I will be really disappointed if it doesn't go to No1 after all the effort I've put in to this and winning the show."
Show up to an audition with (some) talent
Sing a number of times
Have friends, family and people who like you call in to vote for you over a number of weeks
Have songwriters write the song you will sing for you
Have musicians play the music for the song, again for you
Show up to some crappy interviews with Look North (Newcastle BBC news)
Wow that sounds so difficult, can't bear how easy a band who has worked for 20 years and started out in a industrial estate slum in LA had it, those tours while trying to get signed must have been a piece of cake!
and from the Sun:
... And writing their own music"I wouldn't buy it. It's a nought out of ten from me. Simon Cowell wouldn't like it. They wouldn't get through to boot camp on The X Factor - they're just shouting."
... And performing (not lip syncing) live
... And can play their instruments
... Lastly I doubt they would audition!
Shelter have got over £70,000 so far judging by the figures (including gift aid) which I think is great.
And Rage will apparently play a free UK show if they do get number one, would be sweet, great to see the band showing support, including giving their proceeds to shelter also. I think a load of other musicians supported it inc Dave Grohl, Muse and some celebs inc Ross Noble and Stephen Fry
Time to wait for the results now... NME said he was 11k in the lead... but amazon, play, iTunes and Ovi store (for nokia) have it as number one, and a LOT have it in multiple times

The only thing I can see him winning on is physical units in HMV, Tesco etc, other than that... no chance

Did he actually listen to the track or just assume these things. They dont "just shout" at all... total idiots. Besides the fact that simon cowell doesnt like it is a good thing, they guy doesnt seem to understand individualism and unique flair he just wants more of the same processed crap."I wouldn't buy it. It's a nought out of ten from me. Simon Cowell wouldn't like it. They wouldn't get through to boot camp on The X Factor - they're just shouting."

It looks like they did it
Last sweep completed: 1:20am on Sun 20th Dec 2009
1st, 5th, 63rd and 193 in the charts with KITN, Joe... just 2nd in downloads
I guess physical sales will make/break it
Read an article about him "not being gay"
.... I know people that can confirm he was a regular in Twist in Newcastle (a gay bar), and apparently he fancies Cheryl Cole and might be a virgin....
If he didn't have a lot of money from the past week he would be getting the piss ripped out of him!
And if he gets to number 2, 3 or 5, we'll see a gradual end to manufactured acts? *Shrug*. I don't have an issue when people want to do something like this for the lolz, but I can't see how this stunt is any less guilty of 'Christmas chart fixing' than whatever Simon Cowells has done in the past.
I do not see how this campaign is really promoting 'individualism'. While RATM may be an act with more diverse talent, any 'victory' here is still achieved because someone orchestrated this campaign. Had everyone gone went for what they wanted as a Christmas number one this year (ideally, because they think the song deserves it), nothing would've come out of it.
I'll be honest, I saw this movement a bit as a harmless fun (keeping in mind that I do not care who goes to Christmas no1 and hasn't in probably about 10 years - can't even remember the last one). But some of the digs I see against the 'evil Cowells and his puppets' comes across as 'mob'-like.

All joe does is karaoke, he has no skill, no talent, nothing whatsoever! Just because he won a lame pathetic TV show he thinks he should have Xmas no. 1 that is beyond a joke! and TBH im glad that people are actually starting to "wake up" and realize there is music outside of what you are told to buy, RATM are an extreme example of this!
One thing is for sure though, it shows that the power of a campaign on the internet can work, some hopefully people will be able to get other ("more worthy"?) campaigns to fruition because of it
Still, £60K+ raised for shelter can't be sniffed at

An online facebook campaign which has spread to the press is much different to a national tv program whose advertising comes from its existance.
You cant bunch the two things together just becuase both tactics use advertising, nothing would ever accomplish anything in the modern world without advertising.
Well, we all know how quickly word can spread on the Internet from all the things that have gone viral (whether orchestrated by a company, an individual, intentionally or not). But it's one thing to send a link of RATM to your friends and let them decide whether to buy it, when they feel like it if they wish to, and another to ask people to join together at a certain date just to manipulate the charts to prove someone they dislike (Cowell) wrong, or to protest against a TV show (I doubt that even Cowell insists that people buy the single specifically during this period to make the act he supports number 1 - then again, I do not watch that show). I would see a number 1 resulting from the former as a victory for non-manufactured music. The later may be amusing, but I can't see how it would improve the perception of original bands when people starts questioning the number of people buying multiple copies just to successfully manipulate the charts, rather than the love for music.
