    Re: Sexism in the workplace

My course is Automotive Engineering and the jobs iv applied for are all automotive/military ground vehicle based. Believe me I don't want to write women off here & the last thing i want is too loose good will from Santa & tiggerai! .

As i said above, all the jobs iv applied for are Automotive based, a course which i have been on for 4 years now and ultimately is 95% male based. This is just why i was so surprised to find such a 50:50 level in the workplace.

Perceived 50/50 from marketing... and there are a lot of other support and project management roles around those in engineering...

In my Experience HR usually has a higher proportion of Women too but accountancy has more men. difficult to find out where all the ladies are working.

But @OP if you can it would be a great place to start!

    Re: Sexism in the workplace

Fortunately this isnt something which comes into broadcast engineering as im yet to actually meet a female Systems Intergrator. However, just from worldly experience i do find that girls tend to get preference for jobs nowerdays because stereotypically they do work harder and dont get distracted as much (hell im at work now and look at what im doing ^^). This is especially true in jobs which are mostly male oriented, as Tiggerai said women have had to work that little bit harder to prove themself in the first place and it looks good for the copany to be diverse. Only thing you can do is ignore the sex of competing applicats/co-workwers and make the examples of your work stand up above the crowd.

    Dont quote me on this...

But I agree with woman working harder, but I also understand they take a larger amount of 'sick days' than men.

Hence it's a weird question to ask yourself, less motivated workers or workers who attend less. Hard choice to make.

Quoted... but I haven't got a clue where you've got that idea from - and I haven't got a clue what you're implying with 'sick days' in quotes either...

Yeah I'm not to sure about that either, there were far more males in the office I worked in that were 'ill' then the females.

I'll rephrase, women take more time off due to illness.

The reason for 'sick days' is that often people take time off when they are not sick. If you have worked in the civil service, you'll understand.

Until recently I did. But I don't understand. The most time taken off is due to stress related illness, which is real and a sickness. The most common cause for time off (but not longest duration) is viral infection.

    Google Fu.

And yeah at my workplace there is alot more than women that men. HR is entirely made up of women (massive team). IT is split 50-50. And the rest is 75-25. In my team there is 11 people and 3 men (one me).

My sentiments are the same Andehh. I officially graduated with my Masters in August (Distinction too) - foolish me. I should have just typed up my CV, in big bold font,

Mr. Jan Itor MSc (Dist), BEng (Hons), MIEEE, MIET, AMIMechE(UK), MASME
That's my real title any ways...

I'm hoping that you have figured out the pun above. The problem is that my BEng course (full-time) did not have an industrial year - so no work experience in an engineering firm. The Masters was 1-year full time and so again, no experience.

You can check out my online profile if you're interested; it's all pretty much freelance based work apart from the "Uni jobs" I held when in Leeds. I've been job hunting for well over a year and passed my "wits end" a couple months back.

    Any words of encouragement Tiggs?

I hope something pans out for you Andehh, although current times are not helping matters at all.

Maybe the amount of letters after your name is putting people off?? - I'm kiddin' I know you've worked hard for that!

it just shows how important getting experience is really...

(The IEEE accreditation for my degree mysteriously disappeared... bummer!)

    Re: Sexism in the workplace

Keep on it, and don't be afraid to take a slightly lower level job and work through the ranks and pay scales...

It took me 2 years of looking until I found something vaguely related to my qualification..

Qualifications in the real world don't actually mean much, it's if you can actually do the job to an acceptable level which counts..

I've lost count of the impressive CV's I've seen, but they just don't match up when you meet the person in the flesh and see if they can actually work..
