Adsense Banner - How much money?

Tried searching but not found anything.
- Just wondering if anyone at hexus knows how much money the adsense banner at the top of the forum makes?

I only ask be am considering placing a small add banner on my own forum as a method of off-setting the cost of the hosting fees.

As i understand it, you get paid per click, and in 10 years of using forums almost continuously i have to say ive never clicked on a adsense banner once as far as i know. Not even by mistake. At which point im wondering how much money im likely to actaully make.

I would be after a static text-only banner as we have a lot of users on mobile conections and i have a personal dislike for moving add banners.


Open to thoughts and comments from anyone who knows anything about running an ad banner.

It's not really as simple as "how many clicks will it get". It all depends on your site content, the type of banner, the actual service/product being advertised, the relevance of the product being advertised, the wording of the ad, the size and placement of the ad, the amount of regular users vs new users, the demographic of the site's users and all that sort of stuff.

Whilst it's probably easy to put an adsense banner at the top of the screen and let google guess at the relevant ads, if it's something you're seriously looking in to, you may be best looking at other sources as well (affiliates?) and using a banner ad management system to check the clickthroughs of which type of advert is working. (OpenX is worth a look)

Alternatively, stick an adsense banner on there just to see what happens

I've only recently aquired the forum from is previous owner (underwhich i was lead moderator) and am hasitent to just 'stick a banner up and see what happens' without having atleast a bit of an idea what it will return.

Im expecting the annuall running costs of the site to be around £200, which previously was funded by the owner outright, although mainly becuase his work ment additional steams of income had so much paperwork attached it wasnt worth it. I could afford the £200, but as a student without any real income, the option of trying to cover the costs elsewhere is appealing.

The site is a minoraty intrest site on the topic of uk canals (mainly narrowboats) turning over around 150-200 posts a day, with an average number online of around 20. 7000 registed users in total, with a core of around 100 members.

Might it be worth looking into sponsorship? £200 for a permanent ad spot from a relevant company is probably not too big a deal for a company.

Yes well that is certainly somthing else that i am looking into.
- Currently the canal trade is on its arse like just about any other sector of small bussiness but as you say, £200 is not very much and with the right company behind us there could be other benifits for us and them.

I think Hexus uses a lot of this kind of advertising. The likes of Corsair and the other major supporters probably aren't on a "pay per click" deal as their advertising and sponsorship go beyond that.

Well it is somthing i will have to look into as well, as again im simply going inherted everything and then can see whats what. £200 is a figure from the current owner.
- For that we get 1.5gb webspace, 30gb bandwidth, and whatever the invision software costs per year.

However i have also notice we go over the bandwidth allowence a few times a year, so that might be costing a extra fair whack.

I would have thought relevent advertising / sponsorship would be the best way to go perhaps from people that sell / rent Narrowboats or Narrowboat related accesories ?

My Car owners club pays for its forums via the traders fees with quite a sliding scale ( up to and including dedicated sub forums for the trader )

From what i gather, it's not necessarily pay per click, it's the people who buy things from ads that you want. That is, the sort of affiliation purchases that people make after clicking on an ad on your site. That is how people make big bucks from ads on their websites.

Instead of giving you a penny a click, a boat company might say we'll advertise on your site and in return you get 2% of every sale that comes via your website.

Affiliate links are your friend!
