Just seen IBM advertising Linux in a TV ad. 'Linux Everywhere' I think is what it said.
Am i missing something or is this new?

Would sure interest me if an ad was on like that
A bit of serious competition for microsoft maybe.
At least people might begin to realise that Windows is not the only OS out there.
Yeah it's been out 6 months or so...

I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve. Is it to get the hardcore linux fans liking IBM? or is it to promote linux for servers or home computing? Personally I think linux is not suitable for the general user, its too difficult to use, doesn't have of the standard software everyone's use to and plays very little games.
it's to promote mindshare, so the repsonse to the word "linux" changes from "huh? is that a beer brand?" to "what exactly IS it?". establishing mindshare is vital for any product which is all but hidden from public view. the average Pointy Haired Boss will still insist on Windows servers, not because of any advantage but because he's never HEARD that there are alternatives.
Exactly. The majority of people do not even know that there is such a thing as an alternative OS let alone what Linux is. Untill more people know of Linux there is no point expecting it to be supported by the mjority of games/software/hardware etc.
When most hardware/software supports Linux it will not neccesarily be more difficult to use than Windows.
I'd not heard about that, tis definatly a step in the right direction. It won't be pulling businesses away from microsoft anytime soon though![]()
