    .com vs .net

i guess Hexus is .net because when Saracen registered the domain .com was taken. (just a guess)

but i want to register a domain that is not UK specific.. so .co.uk would have less value

it is going to offer free language mp3's... but i have a choice of

    goodname.com

    idealname.net

    or

    ideal-name.com

    ideal-name.net

    what are peoples opinions ?

    Re: .com vs .net

David actually has the .co.uk and .com domains (aswell as others) for HEXUS registered under his name and HEXUS LTD (same for H3XU5), no idea why they are not set up as redirects though...

I say both and just set one up as a redirect...

Not sure where you're thinking Saracen comes into the domain name game though?

    Re: .com vs .net

If it is aimed at the general masses then .com as that is what everyone seems to think makes it a good website

So in that instance i would go for goodname.com or ideal-name.com

Sorry about the thread derailment (i blame the moose )

    Re: .com vs .net

In my personal experience of forgetting web addresses, if you have name.net but I forgot what the address was, I might try name.com; fail and give up.

If you have name.com, I'd probably manage to find the site again.

(true story, had this happen the other day with a website I forgot the address to)

This of course doesn't apply if they're already familiar with your site and visit frequently.

.com I'd say. It's synonymous with the internet/web as blastuk says.

    Re: .com vs .net

    even if the .com is in this format;

    goodsite-name.com

    vs

    goodsitename.net

you would still choose .com even with a hyphen ?

    Nor me.

I first joined HEXUS as a simple member, though David and I were both Mods on another site. But, if memory serves, David started HEXUS before I even joined that other site, never mind joining here.

For anyone that doesn't know, and cares .... I don't have anything to do with the business side of HEXUS, or the publishing side, just the forums. Oh, I talk with David and PD from time to time, and I sometimes give an opinion (whether they ask or not) and I hope they find it useful, but that's about it as far as the business side goes. I pop down to the office from time to time, and know quite a few of the people there though most of them I only actually physically met fairly recently.

I did do a lot of the setup of the forums after the last rebuild (several years ago), but that's only because I'm familiar with vBulletin from running other sites, and David and the others were up to their ears in other stuff at the time. And, pretty much all I did was reinstitute, with a few tweaks, more or less what was already here.

I have no involvement on the business side, and have never had anything at all to do with domain name registration. I don't even know where they're registered. All I do is forum admin as one of the team, and sometimes a bit of setting up if it requires a more detailed familiarity with the way vb works, and even that, Steve usually does. If it's creating forums, changing usergroup permissions or setting up new usergroups, it might be me, or Steve. If it's coding tweaks, it certainly won't be me, as I don't have server access, just admin panel access.

But as for domain names, nuffink to do with me.

I would also guess (and it is a guess, having never asked or been told), though, that you're right j1979, the .com was probably taken. Or maybe, as this is a net service, .net was felt to be more appropriate.

    Re: .com vs .net

Well strictly speaking, back in the beginning, .net was for network infrastructure, whereas .com was for companies. So if you were running a web site for, say, Hoover, it would be hoover.com. If you were running a portal such as say Google, you'd have Google.net.

Maybe what we need is a .pub for publications. It'd bring new meaning to "popping down the pub".
