    Mikeys Berlin/Krakow pics

Just a few of mine and Mikeys faves!

At Checkpoint Charlie! This really impressed him.

    Berlin Wall.

He said this place was moving! it was a momument to Jews in Ghettos... if you look the the labryinth has staggered stones. Mike said as you walked through them the stones got higher and narrower, giving the perspective of the Jews wandering lost and alone

My Boy!. He loves his soviet hat!

    With good friends!

The human hair that they shaved off the jews before sending them to the gas chambers. He said he didn't think it aproppiate to take pics of the gas chambers and crematoria.... He said it was horrific in there. You could see the silhouttes of the victims that had clung to the wall as the gas enveloped them.

He laid his flowers here... But his batteries ran out so couldn't get the pic of him laying them.

He said that Auschwitz was totally moving, but amazing. He said that he kept getting prickles down his spine and that the atmosphere was just so heavy, he said he stood on the rail way ramps looking towards the Birkenau entrance where selection took place and just felt pure misery, he said it looks intimidating now, and god knows how it felt standing there being separated from your family He said they all came away quiet, he said he just didn't know what to say or think.... I think he's still getting his head around it tbh, it may be a while before he opens up about it. He said he was glad he went though, and hasn't ruled out visiting in the future.

Glad he had a fantastic trip though!. With some good friends and Teachers who allowed them a little bit of freedom to explore

Everyone I've talked to that's been there has said it's a very moving place to visit, I intend to go there myself one day. Glad he had a good time, no doubt he's learned much more from that trip than he ever would hearing about it history class

I never knew that. Then again, i am blissfully unaware of alot of the more indepth details of the Holocaust.

Mainly because i think it is pointless reading about it, and something such as this requires a visit to the site to be able to take it all in and visualise the extreme scale of the persecution and subsequent execution.

Although these relatively nondescript images are enough to send a shiver down my spine, and i'm not one easily swayed into that area...

    Thanks for posting them Shelley.

I'm really glad he got something out of the trip, I hope he doesn't have any regrets in going. It's a place that part of me would really like to visit, yet another part of me really wouldn't want to at all. I guess this is the same for a lot of people.

i'm in a sarcastic mood tonight, which means i am gonna take the piss...

    cept..

i have been to the german underground hospital in Jersey, which is the tip of the iceberg really
seen the badly plastered walls where the people that died making them have been plastered into
seen the areas where the master race have decided its good enough for those not in the plan to die and lay their bones...

    but i digress

    its a lesson...

Mike writes "Thank you for all of your comments "I'll never forget my trip to Auschwitz, it was amazing, interesting and heartbreaking... Didn't think the place was that big a deal until we started learning about the holocaust at school and then it's easy to separate yourself from what went on there, visiting it is different, you really understand about how the place was operated and how the prisoners were controlled, plus the very atmosphere is evil, and it's easy to forget that there were people of all nations emprisoned there, even British POW's, i'm asking how can men with mothers wives and children treat another persons wife, child and mother like that? I keep asking myself was it fear for their own lives under Hitlers third reich that drove them too it or were they just as sadistic? Can fear really drive someone to treat another that way? so many things to think about. Not sure i'll ever understand.

All over Berlin there are signs of the terror that Hitler inflicted on the world. We also visited The Topography of Terror exhibition which is where the Gestapo main offices were, before it was bombed by the Allies, we saw the basements where political prisoners were beaten and tortured, very interesting and just made you think about how much hate there was and nobody not even Hitlers people were immune to that hate. Anyway we had a fab time in Berlin! the hard rock cafe was amazing! saw so much cool stuff stuff belonging to so many cool people, Axl Roses boxing glove, Madonnas Bra and a guitar signed by Metallica to name just a few.

Glad you all liked my pictures and thank you for reading

My better half grew up in Berlin, her dad was posted there. She can speak about Berlin and Germany in general until your ears fall off apparently, though I've only had a few stories so far. It's a bit of a specialist subject of hers.

Reading that Shelley, it's clear that your son is an eloquent and intelligent chap; the photos and write-up have encouraged me to confront my own fear and go see it for myself.

A minor point, but maybe it would have been better to put a paragraph break between the horrors of the Third Reich, and what a good time he had in the Hard Rock Cafe.

They should meet lol as It's soon becoming Mikes as well, and Berlin is a special place to him now. His interest started with his Grandad being a soldier and listening to the storeis when he was little. The war was his main reason for taking History GCSE, it takes up a huge part of the course.

He says his hat rocks!!!! he's barely took it off since he came home lol

Thank you Rave... This is a comment we hear quite often And yes, I know what you mean about the paragraphs didn't like to point it out though

And yes, I do hope you get to see it for yourself one day... I too would like to go and visit, Mikes enthusiasm is contagious
