The 4chan community of 7 million users, which Poole called a "meme factory," has been blamed (or credited) with starting the LOLcats and Rickrolling crazes.

LOLcats are those goofy pictures of cats with random phrases pasted on them. Rickrolling refers to the practice of sending a Rick Astley song to a friend, or posting his music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" on a Web site in an unexpected place.

The image-based message board also is known for spreading porn and for hacking into mainstream Web sites and social networks.
It's an interesting interview with Poole with him making some valid points with reference to online anonymity. Is it justified on somewhere like 4chan where content can be...well, a little distasteful at times.

The memes can get annoying, especially those ******* cats.

However I do appreciate some of the things that community has done. I think they've gotten a few people arrested (rightly so?) in its time, and have e.g. called the police to a person's house upon finding a suicide note.

Re: 4chan founder defends online pranks

Haha the internet is simutaneously much better and far worse with the presence of 4chan. I have to admit, not a fan of lolcats and many others but there have been some absolute gold memes to come from there.

Re: 4chan founder defends online pranks

If 4chan has taught us anything, it's that even a group of anonymous internet dwellers can work together to do some good. There's been quite a few instances of people abusing, torturing and killing cats, then posting about it on the internet only for a bunch of people on 4chan to track them down and get them arrested and charged.

Though I think most of /b/ is full of meme-spouting morons, there are rare occasions when they pull through.

This happens a lot on gore / real news websites i.e. Ogr*sh and TheY*C

Many people dislike these kind of websites due to the people viewing them being "sick", but it does show real life at it's near worst (the worst will never leave Government property), but the stuff that is released, if it is a video that has never been posted, and it's a clear criminal act, due to these websites having tens of millions of members worldwide put together, people are arrested and charged all the time.

And then you have the criminals posting the video they have made directly onto a site then tracked, utter idiots.
