Thumbs up Low cost affordable housing is here, today & it's plastic fantastic!

And not just any old plastic either, it's called Thermo Poly Rock & it is made entirely of recycled plastics. A Swansea company, Affresol has perfected a way of turning all your old TV sets, plastic tubes, and other refuse into low cost, carbon friendly building materials it says can be used to build a 2 story 2 bed domicile for about £40k.

The rick is, apparently, the blending of the selected refuse with minerals to produce a new material Thermo Poly Rock (TPR) with a structural strength of approximately 10 times that of Breeze Blocks.

    Quote Originally Posted by BBC
Affresol managing director Ian McPherson said TPR was stronger and lighter than concrete, waterproof, fire retardant, did not rot and had excellent insulation properties.
Mr McPherson said the buildings had huge potential for use across the world.

He said: "Every country in the world has issues with waste and we now have an opportunity to turn waste into an enduring housing resource that is 100% recyclable."

Mr Jones said: "It is precisely the kind of business we aim to promote as part of our economic renewal programme - which is designed to ensure the Welsh economy is fit for the future and ready to compete in high value markets."

This week domestic heating and water system company Worcester Bosch ordered the first modular building from Affresol for its Worcestershire plant.

Worcester Bosch said supplying Affresol with plastic from recycled boilers would enable it to achieve a zero waste policy.

Why does it have to look like a house built in the more traditional way? Why not build it dome-shaped so the water runs off and so it looks, erm, more cool?

    What a load of rubbish

Seriously, it looks like it could have amazing potential.....I just wonder what the temperatures would be like inside on a hot day compared to a conventional brick house.

cool != desirable to most people.

It may to Hexus readers, but not the your average person on the street. This also shows that they aren't restricted to building something specific. If they marketed a dome, people would respond with "that's all very well, but i don't want to live in a bubble. this is pointless" or similar. If you use cool materials like this to build conventional houses it is more readily accepted as an alternative.

Builders are also very conservative (small 'c'), give them direct replacements of what they are used to and they are likely to use them, show them a completely new way of building and you get a lot of air sucked between teeth and shaking of heads.

Anyway, domes are terribly inefficient for that size of a building

No need for roof slates or guttering; you could get up to fix your own TV aerial; all the round things in your house would fit. Aren't you bored with the way our cities look? A round estate would be the dogs testicles

A womble-like burrow would be strangely apt as a building type.

you've never tried walking up a dome have you?

Would mess you up on the 25th as well though, i doubt a domes house would have a chimney to slip down

What about an underground flower shaped house?

The local luddites round here are a sucker for progress and they recently protested against Gary Nevilles new 'eco' house and you can find more regarding this here

I salute him for being so forward thinking and hope it goes through but with the amount of people complaining it's quite ironic that such an eco-friendly house might fall at the first hurdle as a few luddites start to kick up a fuss.

Local planning officers/laws are also a problem. It's very hard to get something approved if it isn't a fairly traditional design.

One of my best friends is a local planning officer, he's a great guy but a total bastard when it comes to planning applications.
