Remember every key on the keyboard

Decided to give my keyboard a good clean last night, so I took it apart, placed all the keys in a bowl of hot soapy water and did the same with the other part (doubt it's got a name, the plastic bit the keys go into!). Left it for a few hours, then rinsed it all off with cold water and left them out to dry overnight.

This morning I decided to see if I could get every key in the right position without cheating. Took me about 20 minutes but I actually managed to get every key correct . I got all the letter keys by closing my eyes and imagining me spelling a word, then wherever my fingers went I just trusted myself and placed the key there. Worked out good!

Anyone else think they could do that ?

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

I'd probably be able to get them down to two or three key areas, but doubt id be able to do it all 100% correct .

ZXCV keys etc would catch me out i think.

hmm not sure i'd get print screen, scroll lock and break in the right place, same with the numpad operators.

but other than that yes, easy. Laptop, hell no.

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

It should be simple really as most of them order themselves anyway (numpad, numbers, function keys, arrows, etc). Custom media keys though, might get clumps of those mixed up.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

I've done it on a few occasions before, I didn't think it was a big thing that I put all the keys back in the right place considering that i've been tapping away at QWERTY keyboards for nearly 20 years...

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

I can recite the layout of the letters without having anything for reference. I can picture the locations for most of the rest, and I recokon if I had a dismantled keyboard in front of me I could work out the rest (other than maybe the number pad operators, 'cause I never use the num pad).
As Singh400 said though, most geeks that have been tapping away at keyboards for 20 years can remember most of the layout.
Is it sader that I can still remember the key differences between a BBC B keyboard and the standard PC. I have a beeb emulator (beebem in fact) which by default maps the keyboard based on physical key position and I can use it.

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

I tell you how bad it is, on my old keyboard the keys used to be like this:....

[PAUSE BREAK] - [SCROLL LOCK] - [PRINT SCREEN]

However, on my new keyboard, the keys are like this...

[PRINT SCREEN] - [SCROLL LOCK] - [PAUSE BREAK]

And I still press [PAUSE BREAK] out of habit to get a print screen.

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

good question, i think like OP i would type without keys and wherever my fingers went would be the place to put it.

the insert printscreen pause/break i wouldn't have a clue, looking at it now i expected a different order

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

I guess I sort of cheated with my keyboard, since it's obvious which keys go on the outside since they are slanted to that side and what not. A couple of the big keys (spacebar, big shift, backspace, enter, big delete, etc) have metal bars under them so when you press one part of the key the whole thing goes down. I never knew that, the more you know eh .

Re: Remember every key on the keyboard

Strange one, but I dont think I could put my keys back on in the right order, but when I'm typing I tend to look at the screen not the keyboard so some part of me knows where the keys should be.
